old_laptop
I recently picked up a new shitty laptop.  And when I say shitty, I mean the cheapest laptop you can buy walking into a Best Buy these days (not a netbook and not on sale).  So here's the interesting part.  Even the cheapest laptop these days can still play some games. Now I can't play "real" PC games from the past couple of years, but I can play many of the smaller and indie games released this year.

So here is what I'm playing now and here is what I need from you.

I started playing:

Torchlight
Plants versus Zombies
Machinarium
Osmos
Freespace 2 (soon the BSG mod)
Audiosurf

I need:

Recommendations for really good small, indie, or older than 2005 "real games".  You know, something like World of Goo, if I had not already played that game. I haven't played PC games since Diablo 2 and Baldur's Gate 2, so I have some catching up to do.  I don't like RTS games, and I won't play MMOs.  Also, I would really be into something with a fantasy (or low fantasy) setting right now.  The book series I'm reading (A Song of Ice and Fire) has really got me jonesing for some bleak ass fantasy drama.  When making these recommendations, realize you will not have to see these on the feed -- so don't hold back on the nerdy, turn based strategy games.

No RTS games? Well, that certainly chunks my list down.

There's Freelancer, a space combat game and spiritual successor to Freespace 2. I've loved this game since I first played it.

Secret Weapons Over Normandy is a fantastic flight combat game.

An older shooter called "Chaser," I really enjoyed, though I doubt you'll be able to find it anywhere.

Septerra Core, if you want a scifi story-driven game.

That's about all I can think of at the moment, excluding RTS games.

Maybe it can run Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall? Who knows? It's free on their website, same with Elder Scrolls: Arena. Requirements are listed as well.

Gryomancer by Square enix is a decent RPG puzzle game. It is quite pricey for freaking puzzle game like $15. I recommend pirating the game. In all sincerity, it is a nice RPG puzzle to try. There's a demo on steam where you're limited by levels but it's really short and easy.

Well, not to hold back on the turn based strategy, the heroes of might and magic series are all very entertaining imo.

Also, 'I wanna be the guy' is a pretty damn hard game, and requires some willpower, angst-management and a couple of walks around the neighborhood to cool down. If I remember correctly its flash based, providing downloadable link here if you're interested:

The one that came to the top of my head was Grim Fandango, one of the best written games I've played, sorry that it may not tick all your boxes, but I would just like to mention it seeing as your laptop should be able to run it.

A great indie game I remember playing was Zeno Clash, which is a first person game with its focus on melee combat and a cool fantasy/punk style.

oh god yes, i was thinking about making a topic on the forum about pc games on the feed but now i dont need to. so cos youre in the mood for fantasy rpg's i'd recommend icewind dale (these are from bioware if i am correct) 1 & 2 and planescape torment. but i'd also like to recommend some other great old games. you should really check out Deus Ex and System Shock 2 too, classics. you can old games from gog.com and steam i'm quite sure you'll find some games on gog.com you have always wanted to try/replay and i'd recommend checking out sacrifice, giants citizen kabuto and ofcourse the fallout games from gog.com. and if you need to satisfy your multiplayer fps needs, i'd recommend battlefield 1942, counter-strike 1.6, quake live and unreal tournament, ofcourse there is a lot more but those are my personal favourites. but yeah i'm looking forward to see you play some pc games!

I second Darknezz's Septerra Core. Awesome game, but you might run into a game ending glitch if you don't patch it.

Also, the original Fallout, but possibly Fallout 2 because it's much more forgiving and you can extend the countdown much easier than in 1.

Planescape: Torment, you probably know this one, but its very bleak and dark (not Nick's "fucked up" ), very story-driven and uses the Baldur's Gate Infinity (?) Engine.

Finally, Dungeon Siege. Real Time Strategy + Diablo II + Generic story. Pretty good game, and a laptop from the early 90's could probably run it.

oh just read the full post and the feed part. well thats too bad but i'd also like to recommend some even more games:
    Shooters;
    Hidden & Dangerous 2
    No One Lives Forever 1 & 2
    Mafia
    RPG:
Titan Quest (not sure if it will run on your computer though)

oh god, i should really learn how to read and sorry for this spam but more games just keep popping to my head. as for turn based games i think you should try out the first UFO games and definitely Silent Storm. Silent Storm may not perform very well with your pc but there is a demo of it so you can try out if it will. and for more rpg's i think you should try the gothic games, i have read many positive comments about them. Sacred 1 & 2 should be quite solid diablo clones too

    There's a few games that I'd recommend:
Serious Sam First and Second Encounters ( Non-HD version)
    Unreal Gold (the original)
Alien vs Predator (though that is one of Nick's favorite series)

Good thing that there's still people playing these games online today.

maybe you can check out "Plancescape Torment". it's an adventure-rpg, much in the style of baldur's gate, but with a better story.

deus ex and system shock 2 are both great games and have community patches that updated the graphics and sounds to be more appealing to the crowd today, as well as the original half life and all of the mods it has. the witcher is also a good fantasy rpg for the pc that came out in 2007, not sure if you could run it, but you might be able to on its lowest settings or with some tweaking. two other good indie games would be defcon and darwinia too.

I'd REALLY recommend playing Mount and Blade. It's a mix of RPG/RTS hard fantasy. You're a commander of a medieval army that retains control over the character. So as yours troops fight you're racing around them on your steed. The combat is deep, the game is tough and it has THE BEST and most realistic horse riding of any game. It came out recently but its beta has been going on for years, and it doesn't require a lot to run it.

Morrowind came out in 2002, playing that with some mods might be fun.

Freelancer was a damn good game, again with mods could be fun (there's a star wars mod for it somewhere)

Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 for sure. No way you can own any PC and not play those games. I started playing it again a few weeks ago and never stopped until I got Dragon Age.

Also, there are a lot of cool Half Life 1 (or 2, provided the laptop can play it) mods that are definitely worth checking out, both single player and multiplayer. I was addicted to Sven Coop for a long time, The Specialists, and a ton of others.

It really sucks you're not into RTS's Brad, though your laptop probably cannot handle much, because I was going to say you HAVE to play Sins of Solar Empire. By far my favourite RTS.

If you would be interested in a somewhat arcadey racer I would definitely recommend Trackmania there's a free version on Steam and if you like Trials I'm willing to bet you will enjoy it. AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! A Reckless Disregard for Gravity is also pretty entertaining it involves you jumping off a building staying close to buildings for more points and trying to hit a small landing point, check it out.

But finally I really cannot place any more emphasis on this YOU NEED to play Ben There Dan That and Time Gentlemen Please! The game was developed by a couple British guys who have a lot of reverence the old Lucasarts adventure games of years past and the game shows it. A lot of the humor and even gameplay references poke fun at old school adventure games and if the idea of shooting a nerdy Dinosaur game developer with a Death Star sounds funny to you both games will be totally up your alley.

    Eufloria,
its an RTS where you control seedlings and take asteroids.
its a pretty nice looking game which was the draw for me (if you zoom in real close you can watch your seedlings grow individually)

gets pretty difficult towards the later levels too

watch some videos on it - its good

I played a lot of PC games when I was younger, and the two at the very top of my list (still my favorite games of all time, in the top ten) are Journeyman Project 3: A Legacy of Time. It's a point and click adventure-puzzle game with time-fuckery and horrifically hilarious acting cutscenes. The other is Black Dahlia, which was actually made by a very wee and young company called Take-Two Interactive (ya rly, the T2). It's a point and click mystery/action/adventure game about serial murders that took place in Colombus, and follows the character abroad.

Both are story heavy and I'm not sure how easy to find, but oh dear god do I love them.

Madballs in Babo:Invasion is a really fun game. You can find it on Steam.

Quantz is a nifty indie puzzle game.

    Sven Co-op is a fun mode for Half-Life 1.

Besides those, I don't think you can run more graphical-intense games on that laptop.

    "Real" games:
Heroes of Might & Magic, I would personally go for #3
    The Longest Journey
    Grim Fandango
The Curse of Monkey Island aka Monkey Island 3
Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines, Source games scale pretty well, so I think you can play this. Community patches is a must with this one, for several reasons, but it's still one of the best rpgs out there, right up your alley I think.
    Civilization 3
    Commandos 1-3
    Oddworld Games
    Syndicate
    Deus Ex
    GTA 1-2, FREE!

    Fucking fucked up games:
    Pathologic, http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2008/04/10/butchering-pathologic-part-1-the-body/
    The Void

    Awesome time wasters:
    Deer Hunter, I'm serious
X Tycoon games, I prefer Transport Tycoon
    Trackmania
    Peggle
    Simcity
The Sims, once again, I'm serious

There's tons more but I can't remember them right now, hope you find something you like.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned Cave Story yet. It's a free indie 8-bit platformer/shooter game, and probably the best freeware game around. It's a small download, only about 2 megabytes or so. Make sure you also get the English Translation patch!

Well, beyond the usual 'Aquaria'... There are a few Indie games I've enjoyed:

La-Mulana - http://lamulana.super-turbo.net/wiki/index.php5?title=Main_Page (Coming to WiiWare this winter... But the original is still awesome.)

Warning Forever - http://www18.big.or.jp/~hikoza/Prod/index_e.html (My favorite Shmup, bosses evolve to defeat you based on how you defeat them and how they defeat you.)

Iji - http://www.remar.se/daniel/iji.php (Very nice side-scroller with RPG elements. Quite flexible in regards to how the story can unfold. Trailer - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33mxD4FjD3w)

Also, keep in mind you can use the Steam account that David set-up. Besides being a good medium for a lot of low-spec but awesome games (Like Aquaria.) you can log-in from any computer and play the games tied to that account. (Install and play to be precise.)
