Harping on what David has already pointed out, here it is again. The first was Brutal Legend and now its Dragon Age: Origins. Two supposedly "epic" games with some of the cheapest packaging I've seen yet.
Again, we see the pie-slices taken out of the CD-case, making the entire thing feel flimsy. Again, we have the black and grey manual. Hard to read, bad on the eyes and certainly not making me feel like my $65 was well spent.
The manual, especially, angers me. As an artist and a musician I slave over our CD covers and packaging. Making sure people get their money's worth in the aesthetic department. There is no reason, and no excuse, for skimping in this area. Especially for something that I will NEED to read time and time again as I play through the game. Sometimes in low-light situations.
I'm installing Dragon Age now...I'm already pissed off.

That's some serious BS right there.

What were they thinking?

I am seriously disappointed about this. 2 games that are epic and they can't afford a little more just for a box. Really? >.>

....well... maybe they spent more on the game than the packaging?
I dunno.
I kinda prefer how Sony does it. Rather than skimp out on material, why not just make the box and manual shorter?
I agree it's irritating, however, I don't buy a lot of 360 games, so this doesn't happen to me much on my PS3.

Ps3 packaging is awesome.
That is all.

I really could care less about the fact that the case has missing sections. It's not like I'm going to be using it to support my coffee table.
The fact that color manuals are by becoming so rare is very disapointing. There's nothing better than buying a new game and flipping through a beautiful manual while you crap before playing. The manuals/books that came with the limited edition version of Oblivion were brilliant (for the PC at least).

The manual is really obnoxious. I'm with Joseph on this one in how much slaving goes into packaging and art, when people can just skimp out on it. I'm also one of those "weirdos" that likes to read the manuals for certain games, i.e. really big RPG's.
However, I'm not against the pie slices out of the casing, since it really doesn't affect the game in anyways besides having a slightly flimsier casng. But, maybe I'm missing out on that because I don't own any 360 games anymore...

I dont care if they make case mods to save on cash, but with the money they save on the cases they should at least be able to print the manual in full color.

i just got the game, and from the case i can tell that the thingy that golds the disk, is gona crack your game. my fallout 3 case's centor thingy was REALY tight and it crack aftetr jamming the thing to get it in and out of the case. wha i did to remedy this is i took an old game case with a game in it that i dont play anymore for the same system and replace the disks and cover sheet. also what one of my friends does is the buys computer cd cases and he puts all his games in those and marks the disks with the game. in anycase this game disks is dangerous for continued use so for every one reading this i suggest getting a different hub for your DA:O disk.

No, Bioware! How could you! I feel moderately betrayed.

I don't even use the original case for my cds. Not a big deal to me. Lawlz, I don't even buy 360 games for that matter, so I have never had this problem.
In all seriousness though, be pissed if the game is bad, not at the case. If your worried about your games in these cases, consider buying a cd case.
Although the manual is fail. Can't argue with that.

borderlands 360 has this shit too.

Well, that's kinda lame.

You're all missing out on the point that Joseph is trying to make. He paid $65 dollars for that game and they couldn't even give a nice colourful manual to go with the game. I agree with what TemjinZero is saying about how they should just make the flipping box smaller instead of being douche bags and supplying you with a half arsed case.
How about they stop putting the Microsoft points cards in huge orange game cases to save money? Instead of cutting slices out of it.

I typically use those to store my games, so they need to protect them well. If this change affects that negatively then this really ticks me off.

That's what you get for not buying a game like this on PC.

Oh man, that makes me sad, specially because when I pre-order special edition games I expect the packaging to be amazing, and when it's a normal game with a good one, I regret not getting special editions.

Hmm this is quite weird, the UK doesn't have any game with that type of case, even brutal legend had regular normal case =S

Well, I can't blame a publisher for cutting corners where they must to ensure they lessen costs and secure a decent profit margin in these times of rampant piracy and second-hand sales.
I haven't run into one of these cases yet, but we reap what we sow I suppose.

Arn't we being a bit greedy here? Gimme gimme gimme?! As long as the game is great then who cares about the case and the manual. If the case can protect a disc then it's also fine. I rarely ever read the manuals that come with the games. I usually just play it and learn by doing than reading. Like Psylah said things have changed. Hardly anyone except for the rich have enough money to splurge nowadays. People are pirating games which means less money for the game makers. Things are bad enough now and they're probably going to get worse come 2011 and 2012.

I'm gonna guess that the cost saving boxes are only in the states, or at least not here in the UK. Why only cut corners in one country, or are boxes made by a different company depending on where you are?
