Demon's Souls

Demon’s Souls is a challenging game, as you may have heard, and I am stuck in a rut that I can’t get out of. One thing I really dislike is a grind that feels required and in this game it feels like that. There might be easy places to farm for items or souls and if it is easy, I don’t mind so much. But from what I have found, I don’t have any of the farming areas even close to being unlocked. Why? Because I am stuck in a continuous cycle at 1-2, the second real stage.

Ben -

The first time on 1-2, I made it to the boss battle in my body without summoning anyone. I took out the archer minions and then attempted to take out the main boss. But I was crushed by his first shield attack. I died. On the second go, I was summoned by a player at the beginning of the stage. This went well for the most part; we were working along, taking little damage and cruising surprisingly well, all the way up to the boss battle. My summoner enters the boss fog and I follow right behind him. I am greeted by the giant spear of the boss before I even see him. I died again.

The next two times don’t go well either, with one summoner dying halfway through and other one disconnecting. Now, onto the fifth go at it. Back at the beginning of the stage again, I am summoned. I can tell this guy means business, as he completely sprints by all the shielded-goo enemies to the first part of the bridge. We again, make it up to the boss door where another phantom’s soul is summoned to come along. We begin well, using the same strategy as before. At about half of the boss’s life left, the other phantom dies but we press on and eventually defeat the boss. I give him his well deserved S rank and I return to my world eight-thousand souls richer and body intact.

After this fight, I was a bit drained—both in-game, due to using so many health items and out of the game, due to the fights being so intense. I went back to the Nexus, did some leveling, repaired some items, deposited my unneeded loot and collected myself. After this, I touch the arch stone again, to see what area is unlocked but strangely, I didn’t see a new place. I was later informed by the resident RPG-expert in the community, you may know him as King, that I have to defeat the boss in my world, in my body, to have a new spot to start from. This surprised me. I had done just as much work as my summoner, yet he reaps the progressional rewards? At first, I thought this to be a bit much, but it keeps with the consistency of the world, so I accepted it.

Now, as I go through 1-2, stronger, with more dexterity, strength and a little luck, I see no soul signs for summoning. I make it past the first tower, the second tower, approach the main arena again and see the wealth of soul signs in front of the boss fog along with the enemies I have to go through. I fall short. It crushes me. I am now flat out of healing items and relegated to a soul again. Again, I must beat boss 1-2 then I can regain my body and try to fight it in my own body. But right now, I am screwed. I have no health items and I don’t have any good place to farm them, with the alternative option, the vendors, being ridiculously priced.

I go back through 1-1 again, picking up the low level healing items until I get to a blue-eyed knight to get two of the sightly better ones. I lather, rinse and repeat as I feel necessary. I wonder: “Why do I have to do this?” I realized while summoned in another player’s world, I get zero item drops but I have to spend quite a few items trying to defeat a boss to get my body back. It seems imbalanced towards the host player. I defeat the boss, again; regain by body, again; have no health items, again; spend my souls, again; to then farm for more items, again; only to die, again. It creates this situation where I have to grind to be able to get the healing items necessary to complete the next stage—I don’t really feel like I am becoming more well equipped the more I play. But still, there is something about this game that makes me always want to go back and try to break out of this continuous, and seemingly perpetual, cycle.

I never got stuck in a cycle like that. This is a very hard game though, I can totally see how this could happen, unfortunately.
The thing is, I didn't spend any time at the beginning of the game helping people with their bosses as a Blue Phantom. I think that's why you got to where you are. You used up your health items without making progress by helping someone else in their game.
I mean you are literally summoned into another players game. Their game. Their boss. It's not very weird that you don't make progress that way. But yea, the game doesn't explain certain things well enough.

My suggestion for you is to move on to other worlds for now. You're not forced to keep doing 1-2. The second part of every world is always tougher than the first one. You have 2-1, 3-1, 4-1 and 5-1 to go explore and die in. Although, I would put off Valley Of Defilement for later. That place can be a bitch, even the first part of it.
Also, the Luck stat significantly improves the enemy drop-rate. The higher your luck is the more often enemies will drop loot in form of health items etc. I think I keep my luck at 15 or so and always have an abundance of herbs.
And yes, save the Blue phantom adventures for later. Focus on your own progress for now and don't give up :)

Yeah I noticed there had been a lot of farming going on recently.
I didn't quite understand why they decided to make it so impossibly hard. I mean I can understand the challenge but why create a game that can devolve into a continuous and insane cycle?

The bow is your best friend, Ben. If you have one it's time to start farming souls until you can buy around 200-300 arrows. Make your way to the Tower Knight and sprint to the stairs and start to take out all the archers, be sure to use your power attack on them to kill them, if you use a regular attack they'll fall to the ground and still be alive. While you're killing the archers be sure to watch out for the Tower Knight's ranged attack, stay behind cover and you'll be fine.

Now go to the stairs and hide behind one of the pillars and pull out your bow. Take your time moving out of cover, aimming and firing right as the Tower Knight prepares to use his ranged attack. Once you fire quickly move yourself back behind cover. Rinse and repeat until Tower Knight is dead. It's a little cheap but when a game is as hard as Demon's Souls you take advantage of everything you can. In most cases a bow and arrow can save you a lot of trouble.

As for the whole grinding thing I didn't mind it at first but now I'm starting to. Sure the combat is fun but having to go back into the Nexus then back into an area just to farm one guy for a certain item sucks.

In 1-1 you can kill the red eyed knight by spamming soul arrows for 2000 souls per kill.

If the dragon is giving you problems in 1-2 you can kill it by shooting 100-150 arrows at it from the first guard tower, after that 1-2 is fairly simple.

I havent updated my PS3, so I couldn't connect to the internet when I was playing. I could have updated, but I always get a connection error of some sort once it gets to 9%. From this, I've decided I have to find a way to connect, cooperative seems to be a must in this. Got through the first level and defeated Phalanx, and that took me god knows how long alone.

You should play the game like Brad does..with a shit load of hints and walkthroughs and not get the true experience of Demon souls like you are....

Rip off that armor School. Mobility is more important than armor in that fight... At least I think so.

Don't bother with a shield either, just two-hand your weapon.

Finally, once you've talked with the monumental, I think you can go to any of the other worlds. You don't have to do 1-2 after beating 1-1 the first time as far as i know... I could be wrong though.

This game is the true successor to Ghost And Goblins. Ghost and Goblins was frustratingly hard and Demon Souls is very hard as well. I am glad this game does not hold the player by the hand. I also like the hand to hand dueling, it reminds me of so many movies. And the bosses are crazy hard but I think this game was very needed. Too many games walk you by the hand for the 1st two levels. This one throws you to the wolves and I like that.

I was having troubles too. I got stuck on the boss in 1-1. I didn't have any fire items because I wasted them on those slimes so I had to farm souls to buy firebombs. But Just keep at it man. Once you beat 1-2 you will unlock 1-3 which is in my opinion by far the easiest farming area so far in the game. You can get 1000 souls and 4 good healing items about every 2 minutes there.

The tower boss, I believe, is going to be the breaking point of some players. It's a pretty hard boss and the level leading up to it can be pretty treacherous, especially the last bit leading up to the boss fog (two blue eyed knights and 3 archers with two more archers above.)

The boss itself is flanked by a ton of archers, 8 to be exact, and he has a lot of attacks which make his pattern pretty erratic. He has two shield attacks, three spear attacks, a jumping attack and can do damage while falling down. His spear attacks are a straight forward thrust that often falls short and can be dodged easily but his second spear attack is a large sweeping motion that is probably his most dangerous attack of all. It's got a huge range and does a lot of damage. Running FORWARD during that attack can actually help, since he swings his shield back you can run between his legs and get free attacks in on his ankles. His shield attacks are equally dangerous due to their AOE damage. He has a weak "straight down" attack which pretty much damages a little and knocks you down if you're about 30-40 feet from impact. The second shield attack is he second most dangerous attack. He lifts the shield high into the air and slams it down, this attack has a huge range and the only advice I can really give is to get away from it as quickly as you can in whatever direction you can. As soon as you see his shield arm go up GET AWAY. His other spear attack is only activated when you are on the second floor and his foot attack is a random stomp he does instead of a shield bash. Another random attack/movement is his backwards leap. I don't know what triggers it but for some reason he feels threatened and jumps backwards.

My main tactic going into the fight is to 1) get upstairs and take out the archers. They can be a pain, not because of their damage, but because they can halt your movement by hitting you. 2)After you've killed them all you should head back downstairs and get fairly close to him, so that he can't use his spear against you. Staying inside of his spear range but just outside of his shield range is key. It's about 55-60 foot in front of him if I'm judging the space correctly. 3) What you want to do is draw him into using his big shield bash. It's a lengthy animation that allows you to circle around and get behind him. 4)From there you want to catch the AI in a loop where he uses his straight down shield strike. You basically get in, attack his ankles, and then get out when he slams the shield down. Once he falls down just unleash the beast on his head until he dies.

Once you figure out the timing and range of his attacks, it becomes an easy process. Still, he is a dangerous boss. Not nearly as bad as Flamelurker, but still a nasty fight.

the key to this game is one thing. patience. walk not run. take your time with battles. expecially boss battles. observe first then decide on a strategy. keep an eye on your stamina. dont force it. I stopped playing outside the mist on my fourth boss battle now at 32nd level because I realize it may take some time. its not a race. sit back enjoy the adventure.
