I'm notorious for spending a ridiculous amount of time in RPGs (especially Western RPGs) on deciding what character type I will choose to play, and which skills and ability set-ups I will use for that given class. I often scour message boards and FAQs for days sweating over every little choice I will have to make when I begin one of these games. I'm already concerned for you guys, as I will be playing quite a few RPGs this Fall, and this arduous process will most likely be insufferable to watch live on the feed.
Well, Borderlands comes out in about a month and I figure I should start this ritual now. If you are helping me decide, then you already know the basics about the game. But there is more: If you click this link, it will take you to a description of every class and ability in the game. I love reading this shit.
After reading through all of that info, I have decided that I will most likely be playing the Soldier or the Siren. Originally I was interested in the Hunter, but I realized his bird is not a "pet" in the traditional sense, but actually more so just a glorified ranged spell. The soldier class on the other hand has a turret he can throw out that draws enemy attacks, therefore better serving the purpose of a per. The Soldier also has some really cool support upgrades for this automated turret and the ever badass healing bullets. The Soldier seems like a very solid and balanced (if not necessary) class choice for grouping with other people -- the Paladin of Borderlands perhaps.
The Rogue/Mage (RAGE?) of the game is clearly the Siren. Probably more fun to use than the Soldier; if I pick this class I have no clue yet as to the type of build I will make. Her Phasewalk certainly seems to have its tactical uses, but I'm not sure how I will develop said ability. If the "daze" status effect is extremely useful, I might try to make a full support Siren. But honestly, my stiffy is leaning towards pure elemental damage. I'm just worried she will not be nearly effective enough in this tree.
Overall I would say the skill tree system in this game definitely seems like Diablo-lite. I would put it somewhere in between Diablo 2 and Too Human in terms of skill depth and options. I'm really glad that even after reaching the level cap any given class is nowhere near maxing all his or her skills, as this forces the players to focus on certain abilities. This way we can have groups filled with the same class, but very different builds and play styles.
After reading through those skill descriptions, what do you all think? Whats looks good, and what will you most likely play?

We both know you want to play the Siren.
Seriously, sounds a lot more fun than the Soldier, and the Siren sounds a lot more diverse and you could make multiple builds off of one class.

I'd go with siren if I were you, bro.

Go with the siren.

I myself will be playing as a Siren, probably going down the assassination tree.
I'm a bit worried about the elemental tree for the Siren because some of the abilities only comes to play after killing an enemy (Intuition and Phoenix). Those two abilities would be useless (Or others if you are playing with a group of 4) IF you are fighting a one-target boss. But other then that, there's some nice AoE damage going around if there are multiple enemies.

It's a hard choice. I think I might play through the game with each of the 4 classes. I'm thinking the same as you Brad; I'll probably play as the Siren first. The whole turning invisible and going extremely fast, then busting out in a blast that stuns enemies. is kick ass. Then either the Solider or Berserker in between, then Hunter last. I can't wait for this game..

I used to be dead set on the Hunter until I read those skills on the skill tree site a couple days ago, and now I honestly don't know. All the classes seem fun to play in their own way, so I'd probably go Siren or Hunter first, then the other two afterwards.
Also, Brad it's a sole decision on whether you want to be a supporting/healer Soldier, or running around dazing and shooting elemental bullets as a Siren.

I don't think elemental bullets are just siren, i think it's based on the guns.
I think I'm gonna go with hunter, but siren looks the most fun.

i think i will play as the berserker or the siren.

go with the siren, she is hot and stelthy :O

Clearly, its called the Mogue, not a Rage (im just jokin') But yeah, I think you should deffinetly go with the Siren, seems to fit your style a bit better.

Oh gosh this feels like RO all over again. So many skills and so many unsure decisions of what to put into..
I'm gonna be playing a Sniper/Hunter/Mordecai/Whateverthehellhasthesniper. So far it's just me and SlyT working together.

I dunno, Phasewalking into a mob, dazing them hard and then letting your teammates mop up the remains sounds neat, but only if you're into letting others do the hard-hitting for you.
The Elemental tree seems way more fun and hands-on than the Controller.

I am excited, I think you would make a better solder in being able to lay down alot of hurt at once, I think Siren would end up being too little of what you want her to be.
Me I am prolly gonna play as Mordacai the Hunter class but Im not gonna bother with the bloodwing

I would go for a Hunter or a Soldier. I want to take advantage of the "87 Bazillion" weapons in the game.

At first, I wanted to be the hunter, but after playing some TF2 and goofing around as a heavy today ( trying to kill enemies with just punching), a Tank/Brawler Beserker would suit me best as it would be hilarious and good for the group,

Also, Rogue + Mage = Nightblade
Playing as a Control/Assassination Siren would be cool too since it is great offensive support.

Soldier to siren for me. I'll probably make my final decision when I can get a little pre-final-character-build playtime in and see who feels better to me.
I'm wondering: I can make multiple characters for this game and pull them out when need be? Can I spec out a support solider and an assassin siren and use them when I need them?

You'd probably enjoy the Siren more, seeing as she's more diverse than the soldier in terms of gameplay.
As for me, I'm still going as a hunter, especially now that I've read that.

I'll need to look more deeply into this game. As for all those RPGs I'll stick around to watch them!

I would play as the medic, sniper, or the gunslinger
The siren class also looks pretty interesting.

I never play any of these types of games, so any of these details won't make much of a difference to me. I'm going to get the game regardless though. 360 or ps3 though?

I used to plan on being a hunter, but now I'm leaning towards the support soldier because it seems the most interesting to me with that turret. It also seems that the soldier seems like a more balanced class than any of the others, which is why I'm picking it.

I'm the same way with RPGs. Took me quite a few tries in Demon's Souls to get everything right. And I've had hundreds of courses that I've aggravated my OCD on in Oblivion, and I ended up scrapping 99% of them.

When I first saw the skill trees for each class, I was pretty worried. They all looked so good, as I like stealth, brute force, and sniping.
In the end, I've decided that I'm probably gonna go with Mordecai, but as someone said above, I'm probably not gonna use the bloodwing. Maybe I'll put the point into the bloodwing skill, but no buffs for it. I really like the Sniper and Gunslinger skill trees, so I'll probably focus on those. I really like the buffs due to killing an enemy and speed in reloading and firing rate.

I am having trouble deciding if i want to make a brawler to take all the damage or a medic to heal everyone. Which one do you guys think will be more used in a group? because it seams as though the brawler is only needed in a boss fight where as your group is constantly taking damage

doesnt sound like you want to be Mordecai but, he has the ability to ignore shields when u completely finish off the left column (idk the name) and at the end all the enimes are pure shields so almost any weapon will kill them one shot.
also the soldier takes to long to respond another sentry thing, but it is very useful for bosses.

I went with the soldier and the ammo/grenade regen is very useful, and the turret does a good bit if damage and a shield to hide behind, so the general all around best I guess
