ss4302Valkyria Chronicles 2 might end up not delivering on characters, story, and graphics, but fuck if I'm not excited about the strategic opportunities (and addictiveness) of a much deeper class based system.  According to Siliconera, Valkyria 2 will have 35 character classes!  The game also uses a "class up" branching system much like Vandal Hearts or the later Fire Emblem games.  This is never as cool as a completely open job system (ala Final Fantasy Tactics), but it is a huge improvement over the original game.   It's a bit sad that they are making some of the changes I really wanted them to make, but at the same time adding a younger skewing anime tone and sticking it on an underpowered console.

My other concern is the North American localization.  Sony's download only vision for PSP will most likely increase the chances of this game being brought over, but I'm more worried about a lack of English voice acting.  I did really like the voice acting in the first game, but I'm worried they won't bother this time around, as Valkyria 2 is just a PSP release.  Subtitles and Japanese will work, but since there will no doubt be returning characters, I do want to hear the voices I am familiar with.  Either way, I will be picking up this game.

Cautiously optimistic,

Brad

This is actually pretty interesting, I was worried where this game was going. But did they announce anything about the story? Like will this take place in EW1 or years after the second war?

This sequel's definitely getting deeper with this class system, and that's pretty cool. It would be a shame to leave the great English voice acting in the localization.

They could play this through a TV if Brad has one of the later model PSPs with the Video output.

But yeah, I saw this posted over on GAF the otherday and grew a little more excited for the game. As long as they keep some of the core things that made the original Valkyria kickass then I'm sold on this.

It'll still kick Fire Emblem's ass although I loved the FF Tactic's class system as well.

Well, this is uplifting news. 35 classes to choose from is music to my ears. Now we just need each of those classes to have a large variety of their own skills/abilities to learn and max out.~

Yea, I read about this too earlier. I'm stoked.

I also enjoyed the voice acting for VC1 in english, it was surprisingly well done.

Though, I should mention Brad, if this game does get localized, it's not legal IIRC to localize with just english subs, but still Japanese voices. I think it's a law that any foreign media with an audio track must have that track dubbed in english, or english voices a selectable option.

This issue comes up a lot with Super Robot Wars/Taisen, where I'm sad, but it's unlikely that something like SRWOGs or SRWOG Gaiden will ever come here because Atlus or someone doesn't want to shell out the money to localize the voice tracks when they believe not enough people will buy the game. I'm still a bit disappointed about it being on the PSP, the first game was one of the most beautiful games I've ever played, but with PSP graphics and controls? Meh.

Still though 35 character classes is impressive, and my love for the first game may coax me into buying this one too.... (Of course, I'd have to get a PSP first)

Oh, hell yes. I love job classes and I don't have a PS3 to play the first one on. This is probably going to be my number one portable this next year.

All those classes won't even matter if the Scout is still broken like in the original game.

its probably being ported to the PSP since it is not with the same characters, it would be great to see the characters from the first one on another adventure.

I just they are able to capture the essence of the original and make the all the classes work well with gameplay and not have any redundant roles.
