I got something for you to chew on, though its mostly for someone who follows sales.
The 2nd place console in Japan has been 3rd worldwide
with the 3rd place console in Japan being 2nd worldwide
for over 20 years running (4 cycles).
Eerie...
Wii: first in Japan, first worldwide
PS3: second in Japan, last worldwide
360: last in Japan, second worldwide
PS2: first in Japan, first worldwide
GC: second in Japan, last worldwide
Xbox: last in Japan, second worldwide
PSX: first in Japan, first worldwide
Saturn: second in Japan, last worldwide
N64: last in Japan, second worldwide
SNES: first in Japan, first worldwide
PC Engine: second in Japan, last worldwide
Genesis: last in Japan, second worldwide
But what does that mean for the Future? And what about the Dreamcast?

huh. I wonder if I made a mistake with the Dreamcast. Surely it did outsell the xbox1 in Japan. I'll look into it.

Doh, Dreamcast sold 2.5 million in Japan as of 2004 vs 0.5 for xbox. But the pattern still works if you cut out the 3rd line of every group and make the 2nd line, 2nd in Japan, 3rd worldwide (rather than last).

Its a confusing gaming era, And it really bothers me. I hate the whole "Casual"/Hardcore thing going on in this era. I've never heard such stupid labels in my life until this era of gaming started. Who cares whether a game is hardcore or casual? Really it should matter whether or not the game is good, and fun to play. Thats the problem with some gamers today.
Lets got to the Wii for a moment, Because I think this is the console hit hard the most by those annoying labels. Filled with alot of crapola, But there plenty of titles that are good! Except many people who have been bitching about the lack of 'Hardcore' games are too busy complaining that they fail to notice the good games that are on the Wii.
I'm not suprised that the Wii is doing so well though, Wii Fit, Wii Sport resort, etc. Opening horizons to the newer gamers. That is an admirable thing, But at the same time I find it a crime that some 3rd parties are taking pot shots at this by making piece of crap titles to make a quick buck of a potential new wave of gamers.
Some 3rd parties are respectable in trying so I give them much props for trying on the Wii.

Japan sure is xenophobic about their vidya games. It's a shame really... Of course, as xenophobic as they are, it doesn't boil me as bad as American companies REFUSING to release games that aren't localized.
'Quality control' my ass... Just slap subtitles on a game and translate the text. Don't change Kobayashi's name to Mark, don't change the setting to America, do not pass go, you don't even have to hire English voice actors from the lowest bidder!!
Translate -> Release! Do eet! DO EET NAOUWGH!
