Valkyria Chronicles 2 is official and it's coming out this Winter in Japan for the PSP. Here are my concerns:

1)  Isn't this a bit soon?

2)  Unlike its predecessor, the game will be on PSP instead of PS3. You may have heard me yammer on about this in the past, but Valkyria Chronicles was an important step forward in modernizing and legitimizing the Japanese strategy/role playing genre this console generation.  And it looked great on an HD system.  Now it's on handhelds with all the other strategy/RPGs -- two steps back with this one Sega. At least it doesn't appear to be a grid based game. The game will sell more on the PSP in Japan, so unfortunately, this makes sense.

3)  What's with the new look to the art style and character designs? I fear the success of the anime series is dictating the vision of the sequel. The game looks like it will skew a bit yonger as well. Is that a fucking demon girl in the scan??? I read over on Siliconera that the game will have "school" segments. Ugh.

For a Japanese RPG, the storytelling in the first Valkyria Chronicles was surprisingly tight. A few of the characters were cliche sure, but the performances were likable and often (thankfully) understated. The war story was serious when it needed to be, and the adult themes were deftly handled. And there were actually adults in the game!

But now we have school kids and demon girls....

Hate to be pessimistic... but I loved the first game.

I feel your pain Brad. The first VC is such a great experience for me in terms of the presentation and the theme involved. Now I fear this one will turn out like another generic JRPG. Hopefully the anime-isk art style does not spam over the main parts of the game, for example the battle system.
I hope they did the school part well. Again I fear it being overly generic and boring. And I do not want emo kids or another crappy love triangle stuff like we'd seen in that poor excuse of anime adaption right now.
This game is going to ride on the interest created by the anime series, and either the new watchers will be annoyed by the lack of stupid drama, or the fans of the PS3 game will be utterly disappointed by the death of a promising franchise. I wish it would be the former.

the presence of that demon girl worries me as well.

Is this being handled by a different team? The Valkyria in the corner resembles nothing we saw out of the previous game, from the abundance of visible flesh to the unrealistic 'whip of the Valkyrur'.

Valkyria Chronicles is, hands down, the best current gen game I've experienced and it really deserves better than a switch to a handheld. Hell, it deserves better than a switch to a lower class of development team. Because the first game meant so much to me I'm going to try to withhold judgment until I've spent a few hours with the UMD, but I have to admit that this article has left something of a bad taste in my mouth.

The images and the fact it's on the PSP screams "spin-off" to me. So the fact that it is titled as the true sequel is a little disconcerting.

I am a bit disappointed that this sequel isn't on the PS3, but why were they planning a direct sequel from one of the best PS3 games ever on a PSP? I'm a bit worried of what they're going to do with this one. Plus, where the hell's the Selvaria-like antagonist that we all know and love? Is the PSP incapable of having boob physics?

This doesn't look like it will turn out too well. My guess is that the lack of sales of the first game lead the developers to take a safer and more generally accepted approach to the JRPG genre. Even if the gameplay from VC is translated properly to the PSP, annoying characters and a boring story will still ruin the entire experience for me.

I can understand where you are coming from Brad, Lets look at FFT; Great game, but the sequels did not live up to the game for some reason.

With Valkyria Chronicles 2; I hope that it is not the same case where they're overshadowed by their predecessor....

I think people are overreacting a bit to the VC2 news, in a bad way. I realize that the character designs and setting for the game appear to make this sequel feel much less serious, and detract from the experience that VC1 offered, that most people enjoyed immensely.

That said, I think one of the primary reasons for making this for the PSP would be to expand the exposure to VC. PS3s are far more expensive than PSPs, and there's a good chance that there are more PSP owners than PS3 owners. Of course, the best way to expand market cap would be multi-platform release, but I'm sure they have their reasons for not doing that.

VC is still relatively new waters, so to speak. I mean, obviously we've seen what they can do in VC1, and that made for an extremely popular game. Perhaps with VC2, Sega WOW is trying to test out those waters, and see what kinds of different things they can implement into the VC series. While there's a lot of skepticism revolving around how bad VC2 will be compared to VC1, I should say that VC is a series that deserves a chance, regardless of what does ultimately get released.

There are many gamers who eventually fell in love with VC who at the beginning didn't even give the game a chance because of similar skepticism about how good of a game it could possibly be based upon sales figures alone. That said, while this game doesn't look as serious as the first, maybe it doesn't need to be to still be a good game.

A problem I really have lies not in the story of character design, but more how the PSPs fewer buttons and one less stick will affect how the game controls. being able to run and look all around at the same time was a big part in the strategy of VC1, and lacking a second stick is well... worrisome. Also of concern is how well the CANVAS engine will run on the PSP, as I fear the gameplay won't be as fluid as it was in VC1.

I think it would be best to simply look forward to VC2, with a North American release date, and reserve all criticism for once the game is released. I personally know a lot of people who doubted how good VC1 could possibly be, and I think VC2 deserves a chance.

With regards to FFT, well, I blame Nintendo for how crappy FFT "Advance" turned out. I don't even consider the Advance series to be a sequel, more rather a branch off of the original.

Sadly I can't play the first one unless i shell out the money for a PS3 and the game, so I'm hoping that the PSP version isn't going to be terrible :[
