I started watching the ending to MGS4. I didn't see any reason to watch it seeing as how it's not going to change anything. I'm not going to all of a sudden love the series or dislike it any less. I won't have this magic epiphony that makes me understand everything about the series.
I want to say "I understand why people love the series so much."
I know it's origins. I know that for it's time the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid both made incredible leaps in making forward progress in game development. I can completely and clearly see those improvements. But as far as everything else, here is what I have problems with.
Cinematically, the way scenes are shot, great. Blending movies into games or games into movies, it's a natural progression, but why are things done so poorly? Death scenes are over dramatically drawn out. Story sequences are broken up by horribly introduced data heavy backstory sequences. I hear arguements that it's just Kojima being himself. I agree that it is an argument. But again that doesn't make it ok. How is someone who's new to the series and doesn't understand the history of the series supposed to come in and not be overwhelmed? Not even just by the story, but by the events as well. It's not a question about ADD. It's a director's job to keep the viewers interested and not go off on his own tangent that only certain people will understand.
The mechanics. The controls are clunky. Button combinations are complex. They need to be. There is so much going on that the massive amount of buttons are necessary for getting by. The gun combat I was happy with in MGS4. But the CQC, seriously. The hand to hand combat is as unchanged and crappy since the first MGS. Why does it have to be so damn hard to line up a damn punch?
Hit or Miss Boss Battles. Either your encounters with bosses are the most memorable in the video game history. Or they end up being frustratingly difficult and you want to forget them forever. I always felt like my encounters with Bosses in the MGS series ended up being a situation of I got it or I don't. Either I understood what was going on or I just didn't see the answer and got stuck on it fo

From the ending of MGS4, I keep hearing the same line..."All They Can Do Is Repeat The Same Pattern." Honestly, I feel that about the MGS series. If you look back, every MGS is about a lone hero going up against incredible odds and having to run a gaunlet through a series of boss fights with unique powers and background stories. The characters have always been interesting up to this point, but is there not another way to about making a game? Even the final battle sequence ended up being a throwback to the original with a Snake vs Liquid fist fight on top of a piece of machinery.
In the end, I can kind of
I enjoyed the series enough to finish all the games. A problem I have is with finishing games. I start something, quickly become uninterested, and then put them down. It doesn't take much to get me hooked, but to keep me hooked, that is the real test of a game. Every Metal Gear Solid game has done that. Each one I have sat down and had playthroughs of 6 plus hours. There has to be something there that keeps me interested. But I think it is more from the action. I love running around, the weapons, the love story. I know the game is all about stealth. But it gets me so pumped that I just want to run and shoot something. It's neither an FPS or a 3rd Person Shooter but it's got those elements mixed in without stricly being confined to those genres. That's also one of the positives about the series. You can play it however you like. It's free and open to your interpretation and does not limit you to play a certain way.
I think Metal Gear fans are in love with the past. They're afraid of change. They don't want their beloved series touched in any way. They want their ridiculously long cut scenes, incredibly tiresome back story, and crab clawed controls. That way they feel comfortable. Safe that their world is unchanged. I think even Kojima is in a way like that. Why else did it take so long for the camera system to be changed. It's in Japanese nature to respect traditions.
But I ask, what will happen with the series now? Is it really dead? No, I definitely not. So the next Metal Gear game will have who as a main character? Now that the book is closed. Here is the chance to start a new book. With a new inviting story.
