Last year, the unique minds at Double Fine launched a Kickstarter for an adventure game, a move that was unprecedented at the time.  A big-name developer asking for crowdsourced funds for a new game, let alone an adventure one?  Before any publisher could scoff at the idea working however the game was funded and went on to be one of the most successful crowdfunding titles to date, earning over $3 million in comparison to its now dwarven $400,000 initial goal.  Today, Double Fine is hoping to repeat history with the announcement of Massive Chalice.

Massive Chalice, as is detailed in the video below, is a turn-based rouge-like fantasy title.  The player is tasked with defending his kingdom from a demonic threat in a war that is prophesized to last over a hundred years.  The player will take control of a royal hero who will gain strength as he/she progresses in life.  However, as the war will last far longer than they will live, the player must balance the battles in the field with returning home to sire the next in the bloodline.  The next generation will retain the former's experience and, by equipping weapons and items that were wielded by their ancestors, will make them even more powerful and capable when facing the demonic hordes.  Double Fine likens the game's core gameplay to that of XCOM or Final Fantasy Tactics, something I'm sure many of you just screamed in ecstasy while reading this sentence.

The Kickstarter campaign for Massive Chalice begins today and concludes on June 27th with a goal of $725,000.  Stretch goals for the game will be announced and developed in collaboration backers.  Based on the current pacing of the campaign though I'm certain that this title will be funded.  Check out the campaign right here.

This sounds pretty cool. Strategy RPG is perhaps my favorite genre! :D

The strategy aspect of Brutal Legend was really cool, but there wasn't enough of it. Throughout most of the game the battles were just a thing that got in the way of all the other shit. Near the end of the game is when you really started to get the hang of it, and that's when it became really enjoyable. There was the multiplayer, but no one played it.

Brad Muir worked on Brutal Legend, so I assume this game is a sort of continuation of that idea. Except this time the game is centred around it, so it will be executed much better. I'll probably back this.

I don't really know who Brad Muir is, even though I played Iron Brigade. But I do like rouge-like games, I'll keep an eye for this one.

Additionally stated inside the Kickstarter description is this: "Double Fine’s goal is for all our teams to remain independent and responsible directly to their players."

While there does appear to be some sort of confusion inside that statement, I think the gist comes across, and it's a pretty powerful notion. If they can remain fully independent through the use of Kickstarter (and their own devices), then their trouble with publishers will become a thing of the past. Always nice to see publishers becoming just a little more obsolete as the world progresses.
