It's official. After a 13 year run, over 150 million console units and 1.5 billion software units sold, Sony has ceased all manufacturing of the PlayStation 2. The only units in existence will be the ones in the wild, and as they slowly break down or are thrown away it will slowly fade into memory's distant fog.

At least there are a lot of them out there.

I ended up getting my PS2 late in the generation with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas being the first game I played on it. Admittedly, I was more of a PC gamer at the time and I've played my PS2 more in the last few years then I ever did back then. Going back now, however, I can see just what a treasure-trove of titles there were, and I'm finding a sea of enjoyment building up my PS2 library with all the great -or wonderfully terrible- titles that arrived for it.

But those numbers up above speak for themselves, and I think it's unlikely we'll ever see another console with a run like that. Hats off to you PlayStation 2, now rest sweet prince. You've earned it.

Five PS2s have come into my home.

All of them fizzled and shit themselves within a year of purchase. At our old apartment we had what we referred to affectionately as 'The PS2 graveyard,' a shelf devoted to stacking PS2s that had fallen apart.

We were convinced that they were wired with primacord to keep people buying new ones.

I will not miss the PS2.

I have both a first generation and a slim and they work just fine. Only reason I had to get the slim version is because the fat one couldn't read PS2 game discs that were black like MGS2 and Kengo: Master of Bushido. They had to stop making them at some point, so im okay with cease production since i got both my PS2s.

    Lay down
    Your sweet and weary head
    Night is falling
    You've come to journey's end
    Sleep now
And dream of the ones who came before
    They are calling
    From across the distant shore

    Goodbye old friend

Surprised they didn't pull the plug earlier since practically nothing was coming out for the last couple years. Still, end of an era or something. And thanks to you guys for rekindling my love for this old console with your random obscure game nights and such.

I've had my PS2 since 4th grade. Good games. Good times. Good console. I'm proud of you.

I have one of the brick PS2s (still works) and my first game for it was the LOTR: Two Towers game. Shortly after, I grabbed FFX, but still had no memory card for it. I would actually leave my PS2 running while I was out of the house just so my FF X save wouldn't be erased. That is, until I died one time and had to start all over again; losing about 18 hours of progress. Needless to say, I just played Two Towers over and over until my parents finally got a memory card.

I believe I had 2 PS2s. I remember the Christmas when we first got one; that was a splendid year. The first one lasted awhile, until my buddy tripped on the controller cord and the unit literally went airborne. The second one's disc tray eventually failed to open properly. We would use pliers to grab the PS logo on the tray and manually pull it out (that is, until the plastic broke). Fond memories. GG PS2.

I remember being around 8 years old getting my first PS2, along with Max Payne. Quite possibly one of the creepiest and quite possibly one of the best storytelling action games of all time for me anyways.

Good times, good times. Played most Final Fantasy XI (11) on the Phat PS2 as my first MMO. Yes, it worked just fine. Still one of the coolest console designs, phat and slim.

I haven't used it in a long time, but I am sure it still works. At some point I had to take it apart because it wouldn't read the disc and the tray wouldn't open up. Fixed the tray, but reading the disc only worked 7 out of 10 times.

I got my ps2 pretty late as well (when the next generation had just started I think) but man the memories and games I have experienced thanks to this marvelous piece of hardware will remain with me for a long time, goodbye ps2 thanks for everything.

This really stresses me out. I don't know if I will ever be able to play my ps2 again for fear of breaking it.
