What is this? E3? Today marked a huge day for video game news with the the first teaser trailer for Red Dead Redemption 2 and of course, the long awaited unveiling of the Nintendo Switch (announcement video below)! Of course, the timing couldn’t be better because we officially have a ton of exciting topics to discuss on tonight’s episode of 4Player Podcast! We’ll be kicking the show off tonight with these big announcements and we want to hear from you before we do! For those who were living under a rock this morning, here are a few of the details regarding Nintendo’s big announcement:

  • Nintendo's new console bridges the gap between handheld and console gaming using a tablet style controller that connects to a TV docking station.
  • The Switch controllers(2) attach to each side of the tablet Or to a device that holds them together as a more traditional style controller.
  • Each controller can be detached and used like Wii Remote style controllers.
  • The tablet has a built in kickstand for taking the console on the go.
  • Games appear to be cartridge based.

We will talking at length about the announcement this evening when we record podcast 476! In lieu of Podcast feedback from last week, we want to know what you think of the announcement and what questions you have for Nintendo in the months leading up to it's launch! Leave a comment below and we might read it tonight on the podcast (keeping in mind that shorter, more concise comments are more likely to be read on the show). It's going to be a great show tonight so we hope you catch it live or when it becomes available to download on Saturday morning! We will get started tonight at 8PM (CST) on 4pp.tv (Twitch.tv/FourPlayerPodcast)! See ya there!

I like the look of it so far (except for the default controller) but it seems like people are so quick to get on the hype train when Nintendo still has so much they need to prove. Especially after the wiiU.

I thought that the graphics on the Switch were better than I was expecting. Hopefully the battery life is good. I'm just not interested in getting a console until there are games that I want for it out on the market.

There are very clear design choices influenced by both the Wii and the Wii U, but I like how Nintendo is making it very clear that this thing is a brand-new console and not some incremental improvement. The publisher reveal has me excited too, as the lack of third-party support is why I never play my Wii U.

    Cautiously optimistic.

Not too bothered about it being a portable hybrid, more interested about finding out some actual specs about the damn thing.

Hoping Nintendo have finally pulled their finger out and are actually in the "present" in terms of technology for once.

I like to opportunity for new games coming with custom controllers to enhance the games funcitonalities, like this:

They probably wont do it, but well it its good to imagine.

It is also very funny to see how much they made sure to actually show the console during the tease

I really wish the "pro controller" was the default controller for the console, and hopefully it can be used with the handheld as well. Switching the two mini-remotes between the controller and the handheld is a pretty silly gimmick, imo. Why couldn't it just be two separate things entirely? What if I lose one of the mini-motes!? D:

Looks good, now they just need to stop being a piece of shit and actually make games for it.

I really like the design of the console and the little details they added, like the kickstand. However, those controllers seem far too small and seem like they would be uncomfortable to hold, so I'm glad there's the pro controller option, even if it does end up costing me more.

Overall, I liked what I saw and I'd say I'm interested in picking one up. I haven't been this excited for a Nintendo console in a long time.

I'm happy that Nintendo games will no longer involve any game play gimmicks with the Wii nun-chucks and Wii U game pad. Games developed on the Switch will play like any other game on the market which will hopefully attract more 3rd party developers. It being portable is a nice option to have whether you use it or not.

It probably wasn't the best idea to demo it with a 2011 game.
The way they presented it as a party console, over and over again, left a really bad taste in my mouth. "LOOK YOU CAN PLAY IT WITH FRIENDS!" alright we get it... Playing splitscreen on a 9" monitor with half a controller does not sound very appealing anyway.
Hopefully you can charge it without the dock though.

It's called a Nintendo Switch because you get it for Christmas and try to switch it for something better.

Prior to announcement, the rumors of a console/handheld hybrid and consolidated software library had me excited. Now that the rumors are true, I'm excited and planning on preordering it as soon as possible. I enjoyed my WiiU/3Ds and Switch seems like the next step from these systems. More importantly I'm happy Nintendo finally got their marketing right. Switch is a lot better sounding than Nintendo WiiU2.

I'm curious to see, besides Zelda, what the launch games will be and more information regarding the tablet (i.e. battery life, performance, etc). Overall, mark me as excited for Nintendo.

Some have mentioned that an issue with who Nintendo is targeting is that they expect gamers to want to go outside. If anyone is actually serious about that, I don't see why that's an issue since portable systems are usually shown off in this way.

Personally I figure I'd use it sort of the way Nick played through Windwaker HD; you can play it wherever in your house. That is a feature I feel I'll enjoy. It's nice not absolutely needing to use the TV all the time, I learned from the Wii U.

Although, recently Pokemon Go proved that some gamers could actually enjoy going outside if a game has some benefits to doing so, or if it relies specifically on that. I'm sure the success of Pokemon Go didn't go unnoticed by Nintendo when it comes to this system and they will likely try to capture that magic again.
