Today Playstation unveiled the box art for David Cage's next game-movie hybrid Beyond: Two Souls starring Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe. Here's what they had to say about their decision:
We worked together with the team at Quantic Dream to choose an image that we felt was both cinematic and in keeping with the emotional journey that the final game will take you on. We hope you like it.

Ultimately, we decided on the packshot you see above because it felt sophisticated, mature and different from most traditional game packaging, and it really captures the emotion Ellen Page conveyed in her performance as Jodie. The image of Jodie at peace in the eye of the storm really speaks to her constant battle with the incredible gift she’s been given.

This year we had a bit of controversy surrounding female protagonists including BioShock Infinite's Elizabeth not appearing on the cover art although she is arguably the main character, and creative director Jean-Max Morris revealing the problems involved in securing a publisher for upcoming title Remember Me because the narrative employs a female lead. I'm sure Beyond: Two Souls will not receive poor or controversial feedback on the decided cover art and that is simply because we are not looking at just any female lead, we are looking at Ellen Page. I will bet my money that if this title did not have Page and Dafoe's names plastered on the cover as if this was a movie poster, we would be seeing a very different type of cover. The only other female protagonist we've seen this year on a triple A game cover is Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider reboot, but that is an obvious choice - she is a legend and has a name, much like the celebrity status of Page.
From what we've seen in gameplay videos, this cover is not surprising nor spectacular. What do you think?

Don't think I've seen many game covers with the names of two Hollywood actors on it like its a movie poster before.... don't know how I feel about this, other than the fact this makes it even harder to think of David Cage as more than a wannabe-film director.
As for the gender thing, yeah it's more or less a common truth now that female leads are looked down on by the industry, and I don't think they can blame much of that on the audience. It's the industry that sees female main characters as "taking a risk" if they don't even want women on the cover art. I remember hearing that Naughty Dog actually had to fight to keep the little girl on the cover art for Last of Us, and the thought of that is ridiculous, and can only really be blamed on the industry itself for being so scared of pissing off some HOPEFULLY imaginary woman-hating demographic that they feel is core to their success.

I think it is fitting of the game. I don't see how you cannot have the main female protagonist on the cover for this game.
I got no problems with female characters on the cover art, as long as it convey what the premise of the game is about.

I'm okay with it but honestly I feel that having the actors name right above the title feels a little unnecessary to me.

Cover looks good. I think its fitting to have a movie like cover considering who the developer is. But every time i see someone point out that its a female on the cover i feel its a step backwards for females in video games

I think the actors' names on the cover are most of the flare in this cover art. Other than that the cover is kinda boring. But seriously it's things like this female protagonist-phobia that makes me just want to go indie. It shows that marketers and publishers have their idea on what a game should be and having to debate for putting a woman on a cover shouldn't even take place.

I wonder if different countries will have different cover art such as the case of Heavy Rain. It's not spectacular, to say the least. But when has cover art made the game? Still excited to try this.
