I’ve been growing more and more optimistic about the new Alien game (Alien Isolation) from The Creative Assembly as the team lets bits of information trickle out. A few weeks ago, Sega confirmed that the game would be hitting all major consoles and PC on October 7th. This date shocked me considering it was only recently announced but this might not signify anything else other than Sega is willing to keep certain projects close to their chest until they are almost ready for public consumption. To which I say: Bravo.

Fast forward a few weeks and another game that I have had my eye on since it’s Game Informer debut, “Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor,” has been given a solid release date… of October 7th. A semi open-world game set in the beautifully imagined world of Middle Earth (Lord of the Rings) and in development from one of my favorite teams out there, Monolith (the studio that birthed FEAR, Condemned, and Gotham City Imposters to name a few)? Sign me up!

So now I have a dilemma. Quite honestly, these two games are among my most anticipated of the year. Alien is a series that has always been close to my heart (despite my less than popular opinions regarding the film series) and is LONG overdue for a worthy video game adaptation. On top of that, the game seems to have its feet firmly planted in the survival horror genre which is what I feel that series should have been from the beginning. On the other hand, Middle Earth speaks to me with it’s beautiful world, rich fantasy lore, and ambitious new AI system that governs player and NPC interaction.

So which game comes takes priority? They both have a lot of potential and are deserving of coverage on our podcast. They both appeal to me on a shallow visual level (My PS4 boner is still standing at full mast). They both have respected creative forces at the helm. I can’t possibly... F**K it... I’m buying both of them.

So which one do I play first? Curse you October 7th! Curse you!

Monolith seems fairly new to the 3rd person games because there list of games mostly consists of FPS games except shadow of mordor wich is top down. But according to the assins creed like gamplay i saw it might just be awsome.

But the Alines game troubles me a little bit because it might just turn to Outlast with aliens. Dont get me wrong outlast was a good game but they might enter into cliche territory. Also i want this to have rift support so it can improve the exeperince.

All I know for sure is that it's great that the ratio of decent licensed games to terrible cash in shovelware seems to be improving.

Both Alien Isolation and Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor definitely take new directions apart from being seen in their movies. The people at SEGA are sure enough that Alien Isolation will bring sci-fi and horror lovers together since the last Aliens game didn't satisfy a lot to consumers. The people at Monolith give Lord of the Rings fans a different approach, apart from the regular story line.Putting Lord of the Rings in a game that looks like Assassins Creed is amazing. Definitely a day one pick up for me.

*Not meant to be a contest entry* While Alien: Isolation looks awesome, I gotta say I'm really looking forward to Shadows of Mordor. It's been way too long since we've had a good LotR game.

(Not a submission) I am more excited for the LOTR game largely because I have been wolfing down crap for years hoping to one day stumble on a really good LOTR game...Plus I'm a little hesitant about anything with Aliens in the title after Colonial Marines so i will probably end up renting Aliens via gamefly and buying LOTR.

I guess for me it comes down to the fact that I love LOTR but dont really care *too* much about Alien franchise games nor movies.

I would love a legitimate Aliens game for once. I don't have a lot of history with Creative Assembly, however. I am in total love with Monolith, but the LOTR world isn't all that appealing to me. I think they'll do their best and make great games :)

    Contest Entry!

Personally I'd play Middle-Earth first, but that's just a personal preference given the genres and the movies they're based off of. I'm also just more into "gonna go out and get revenge" rather than a "let me figure out how to survive" kinda game.

I really like how character development happens for both games, in that they're based off your own moves and interactions so everyone's play can be different. Also, about time that these games can be played on all PS3, PS4, Windows, X360, XB1 lol.

Anyways, Monolith's Assassins Creed game was awesome so I totally can see this 3rd person game being just as good, and props to them for moving into new games styles. Haven't played the Total War series by CA the company clearly has some great creative minds behind it and I'm still excited to see what it's gonna be like.

This is a submission post. Shadows of Mordor promises a lot, and I am not sure if it can deliver. That being said the game that they have shown so far seems really well designed and interesting. I don't know much about Monolith but it seems like a fresh idea on Lord of the Rings which is cool.

Alien: Isolation again promises a lot, but at least it is staying true to the original Idea of Alien not the "run and gun" franchise that it has become. I really enjoy CA games the like "Viking: Battle for Asgard" while it wasn't the most amazing game out there it was really different from other games out there and really made a cool impression on me. That being said I am excited for both games, and can't wait to see if they actually follow through with the ideas we have seen and are expecting.

    Contest Entry.

In my opinion both games look really awesome. I feel that personally I will not get Alien but I will get Shadow of Mordor due to my love of LOTR and the play style the game seems to have. Additionally, I will probably get Shadow of Mordor over Alien due to the fact that I'm not a huge fan into horror games. Both games do look great though and I cant wait to see how they end up coming out.

Nick should play Aliens with Carlos, while Brad plays Shadows of Mordor. Then everyone wins.

Monolith seems to be chasing a very ambitious goal with Shadow over Mordor. The whole arch enemy system seems like an interesting concept, but I have this feeling that the mechanics are going to be broken somehow... have to wait and see.

Creative Assembly's Alien Isolation sounds like it could be am awesome game, but having not seen any real details on it, I can't really weigh in. The Total War games have some great gameplay mechanics in them and I thought they did a great job with Viking Battle for Asguard, despite it not being a critical success. I trust them to make an ambitious attempt at a game, but only the final product will show if it worked or not. I trust that this game too will have it's own 'jank' to it.

On a side note, what happened to Assassin's Creed developers accusing Monolith of using AC assets in Shadows of Mordor?
