PS4 Exclusive Deep Down Is Set In Future New York

At the PS4 Sony Japan press conference, Capcom revealed some new information about their upcoming game Deep Down. The game, which was revealed to be a PS4 exclusive, will be an online multiplayer experience supporting up to 4 players, and will feature procedurally generated caves, monsters and weapons.

Here’s the real surprise, though: despite the medieval setting that we’ve seen so far since its original reveal in February, the game is set in New York in the year 2094. A new trailer, which you can watch below, shows a juxtaposition of high-tech gadgetry and earthy caves and temples. It's reminiscent of the Assassin’s Creed series, although it isn’t clear whether the game will feature a similar time travelling premise. At the presentation, Capcom’s Yoshinoro Ono said that players would be able to “read the memories of items”, whatever that means.

I’m not the world’s biggest fan of dragon-centric fantasy fiction or online multiplayer, and I’m not sure if I’ll be buying a PS4 anytime soon, so I might pass up on Deep Down. Having said that, the futuristic setting has caught my attention, and I’ll be interested to see more of what the new Panta Rhei engine is capable of. Further information about Deep Down and a playable demo of the game will be revealed at the 2013 Tokyo Game Show.
