As a massive fan of the Metal Gear Solid series, one could easily think that Konami and Kojima Productions' Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection is right up my alley. A collection of every canon Metal Gear game save for the PSP-only Portable Ops, this release should make me excited for another addition to my Metal Gear-claimed shelf and an excuse to take another journey through such an excellent series. Instead, while watching the above trailer, I just started to become annoyed.

I mean, is this what we've been reduced to? Montages of games we've already owned for years set to the series theme music? It just feels lazy, and the more I think about it, the more I'm annoyed because it reveals how lazy the entire business of HD Collections has become.

There are exceptions, sure: the Zone of the Enders HD Collection was more than welcome for gamers who were pulling their hair out trying to find either game in stores, and Square Enix has put some effort into polishing up the character models of Final Fantasy X and X-2 for its upcoming HD remaster.

But on the whole, all we're really doing is paying $40 for a few upscaled last-gen games, and if consoles- particularly the PS3- had complete backwards compatability, many wouldn't go for the purchase at all. So when I see a trailer like this, which is as slapdash as the entire concept of an HD re-release despite five of the seven non-HD games already being available in HD, all I can do is wonder just how easy they think us consumers are.

Even if I do really want that artbook.

Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection releases for the Playstation 3 on July 9th in North America and July 11th in Japan.

Well Zach, thanks for destroying my lady boner.

    No I'm kidding.

    Sort of.

Yeah I saw that trailer and I was like "Oh....wait is it just a huge bundle?"
The only reason I'm going to buy it is because I have a good chunk of the original copies (missing disc 2 of mgs1) but I'd like them consolidated properly, and I've never played mg1 and mg2.

We both know that Konami has been whoring the MGS HD collection, or mgs collection for years on end, since the PS2 days. It is their cash cow. However, how would you handing this if you were in their position and you knew this game was coming? Would you do anything different?

I'm fine with this since I've never played an MGS title. Once I get a PS3, I can just drop $40 and play 'em all.

Personally, I think this is a good buy for people who are new to the series or who have only played maybe one or two of it. I have a friend who had a PS2 and loved MGS2 and he was never able to afford all the new releases that come out, or a current gen to play any of them on until recently. Now he can buy one package and get all of the games in series playable on the ps3 he just bought. You can't look at it from a "why should I buy this when I already have it?" You need to look at it from a "Since it's easier to find now, people new to the series can get caught up with this package."

The one thing I don't like is how close it came out around the HD Collection about a 1 1/2 to 2 years ago, but at least it's cheaper to go this route to get the HD, MG1, MG2, MGS, VR Missions, and 4.

While I'm not a fan of games being constantly re-released in HD and in bundles and such, for people (such as myself) that have never played any of the metal gear games and are looking to get into the series, this is the perfect bundle.

Personally I love HD collections since it allows me to play my favourite games in much higher quality and in HD but then again I do find it ridiculous they are releasong another HD collection since the original was a huge success.

So, you're basing the quality of this collection off of the trailer? I was scared because I thought the collection might have already been out and it was bad or something (like some other HD collections), but this...like, what would someone expect from a collection of old games? Is an article about how the trailer is bad really necessary?

HD collections are previously released games. What else are they going to show in the trailer apart from a game you have probably seen before? Also i dont mind paying a lil bit extra money over the original to get a HD version because lets face it old games look like poo on anything other than a crt. Your only other option would be emulation/piracy

I'm totally okay with this. Especially with this collection.

I know a lot of people who haven't played the earlier Metal Gear Solid games and this collection puts every single one in a single bundle. I don't understand how this is a bad thing... It was made for the person that doesn't have a ps2 and would like to play all of them. Hell, it even has Peace Walker as well.

If only Nintendo would let Twin Snakes be added into the collection, but they will take the exclusive rights to the grave before that happens.. Selfish bastards.

I think about this stuff more than I probably should but personally I'm fine with it. Being able to play the original games outside of emulation years on is just not that easy to access for people. I'd rather have this kind of stuff all over the place and know that I can play the games that people raved about years before rather than half assed remakes that miss the point by less talented developers and yes, I am talking about Twin Snakes.
