I love Alan Wake.  Millions of people do too and if you don't I just have to say that you are simply missing out.  The series features a very nice story, great combat and very, very intense atmosphere.  Simply put, just play it.  I think you might like it.

Despite this promising franchise, you might have noticed that Remedy's next title isn't going to be an Alan Wake game.  In an incredibly humble and sad message in the video you see above, creative director Sam Wake explained why, stating that, despite the initial game selling 3 million copies over its lifetime to date, the game didn't nearly meet sales expectations upon launch.  Because of this, Remedy wasn't able to achieve the necessary funding to meet their vision of what Alan Wake 2 would be and so they've put it on the back burner.  In its place, Remedy received full funding from investors and the like to develop a new IP called Quantum Break, a game about time collapsing in on itself and the race to restore order to the world.

To give the franchise a send off, Remedy today launched a Humble Bundle for the series which you can find here.  In addition, all avatar and series related items on Xbox 360 are currently on sale.  If you've never experienced the original or its more arcade-style spinoff American Nightmare, I implore you to.

If you happen to be a fan of the franchise, do consider watching the video.  The message above nearly brought me to tears at just how classy and sad the situation was related and so while we await Quantum Break and must suffer an indeterminate number of years waiting for the series to return, I can't think of a better way to send the Alan Wake franchise off.

Wait...3 million copies and still it did poorly? How many were they expecting?

In other news, I welcome a new IP from these guys. Just don't set the same sales expectation as Alan Wake.

If you haven't played Alan Wake, just do it. And if you pick it up with the Humble Bundle, don't be a cheap skate. Drop $15 on it atleast. The game is worth far more than that. I can't tell you how badly I wished we had more games that are as ambitious or as fresh as Alan Wake.

Way to stay class Remedy. Can't wait for Quantum Break.

I bought this game full price when it first came out, and still own it to this day. However, seeing that $2ish average purchase make me sad. I can just see Sam Lake, watching one of his life works he spent years on, being reduced to a mere two dollars, just because some little punk thought ”hmm I feel this is equivalent to a two liter soda purchase”. AGHH! Hopefully Sam, as well as the team that worked on it, at least know people are still interested with the franchise.

As a fan of Alan Wake I am disappointed at this but not really surprised, well it was fun while it lasted so long for now Wake but perhaps hopefully we'll get a sequel in the future.
