A deluge of new info has been made available regarding Grand Theft Auto V today due to a recent media event held at Rockstar HQ. We've been talking a bunch here about the next GTA with the discussion becoming fairly varied. Some are die-hard GTA fans who are fine with the way the series has been going and are looking forward to more of the same. Others desperately want the series to evolve beyond the “drive here and watch a cutscene and do this” formula that has been the series keystone for some time now.

So what are we getting? By the looks of today's information it looks like we're getting both. An expanded GTA V world and story structure that also deeply harbors the embers of fundamental GTA gameplay. The fact is that Rockstar has evolved, even if they've done it away from the series. Their method of dynamic missions structures were improved upon in Red Dead Redemption, while their shooting and combat mechanics were refined during development of Max Payne 3. It's becoming obviously that even though this GTA is one number away, it's actually many multiples ahead in terms of development savvy.

So the quick bullet points for what GTAV will bring:

  • Underwater swimming and large underwater areas with shipwrecks to explore,
  • An area map larger than Red Dead Redemption, San Andreas and GTA IV combined,
  • Expansion of activities like a nine-hole golf course you can play and a yoga mini-game, and
  • the ability to switch between each of the games three main characters on the fly.

The ability to change between three very different characters, whether they are currently together on a mission or not is what intrigues me the most. Media who were able to get a closer look described picking between each of the characters using a selection wheel and the camera zooming up into the sky and then coming back down on wherever the selected character was in the world. Even as just a good way to fight monotony, this get's me excited.

I don't care much for apathy when talking about GTA V. Getting a new Rockstar game is always an exciting experience and I have high hopes for this one. Rockstar has shown themselves evolving in some key areas. Enough, I think, for GTA V to really be something truly special.

I certainly like the sound of where this is going. Explorable shipwrecks sound badass. Wonder if there's sharks too. I'd be curious to see if the characters have varying stats and abilities.

I didn't care much earlier this year/last year but I'm starting to get swept up in the excitement! Those features sounds pretty cool! Maybe pre-order worthy? We'll see in the coming months. And bigger than RDR + GTA IV + AND San Andreas put together? That's pretty damned big. I just hope it's populated and thoroughly filled with... interesting stuff. And I bet Brad is jizzing himself somewhere to the idea of underwater exploration and sunken ships.

Considering the direction they went with GTA IV, and even though these "features" sound nice, there is no way to convince me it will actually be... well... fun.

And to be honest, I think their high point was San Andreas. The gang system at the time was pretty nifty, and the various customization was a breath of fresh air(even if most of it was a bit shallow). Though I could have done without the physical health system.

Also were did all the cheat codes go? Flying cars and bicycles were a blast, throw in riot mode, and you have a recipe for nice helping of a good time.

This map is going to be so huge D: Let's hope it's packed full of fun things to see and do. San Andreas was such a fun game, whereas GTA IV never felt as fun as SA. Switching characters on the fly sounds great and could be used to great effect in missions they do together. Glad I preordered, looking forward to playing.

I'm still playing GTA 4 non-stop, can't get enough of the game, just recently picked up GTA 5. Rockstar toughly has made some incredible improvements, all being on the same console. Which one do I like better, will I have to say GTA 5 of course. The graphics being more clear cut, brighter, makes the overall gameplay better. But hey I still have a soft spot for GTA 4, especially since the cheats can be programmed into the phone, while the cheats can't be on GTA 5. And that was the only drawback I see to GTA 5.
