Yes, classic Thief lead actor Stephen Russel is out, and that sucks, but Thief fans can rest easy knowing that one of the most important things about Thief's gameplay is still present: the game is entirely completable without having to kill a single person.
There was a bit of confusion and consternation among fans who disliked the partially action-y nature of Garrett's acrobatics and explosive gadgetry in the Thief trailer circulated a few days ago, but as Joseph pointed out then, there were zero kills in the trailer. Likewise, in the game itself, "your mandate is to never to [sic] kill anybody," says game director Nicolas Cantin in an interview with Official Playstation Magazine UK.
"It's going back to the roots of Thief," Cantin goes on to say. "You're not an assassin, your [sic] not out for revenge, you're here to steal stuff."
It's good to know that the fine folks at Eidos Montreal have given the official word on a matter near and dear to the hearts of many a Thief fan. It looks like, in this regard at least, there should be no reason to worry.

As soon as they say something about the city factions I'll continue to be suspicious. Garrett may still be a master thief, but without the Keeper training he'd never have become said master thief.

Never finished a Thief but if its anything like the original 2 but with better controls I will definitely be getting a copy.

This is everything I wanted to hear. I had my reservations that they would turn him into "yet another assassin" in order to appeal to the masses but it looks like the creators are really trying to keep the gameplay true to the original. Let's see what they execute on that promise and what they do with the story though...

I dunno...I do not trust people when it comes to games any more. I still think it will be a super simplified cinematic stabby stabby game. Aka shit

I think that's about the best quote ever. I am now extremely interested in this game.
