Today the world let out a bellowing bear-like yawn as Rockstar has released the official box art for Grand Theft Auto V and everyone realized that it's exactly the same as the box art they've been using Vice City.

No really...it hasn't changed at all.

I'm not denying that GTAV will be great -or at least a lot of fun- but this does serve to give ammo to those who complain that the GTA series hasn't exactly evolved beyond better graphics and physics in the past decade. And I think there is something to that. Although Red Dead Redemption changed the setting -and to a glorious one at that- much of it still followed the original GTA formula. And GTA, well...GTA has been on cruise control since it went 3D.

Want a visual? Let's look at all the covers together then.

And Finally...

I'd say GTA 4 was a fair bit different to the rest though I always thought Vice City was an easy sequel for them.

I think GTA 3 was the first to have this cover artstyle followed by vice city, san andreas and so on

I hope they never change. GTA is one of those iconic series that changes just enough to make the game feel different and new although it uses the same formula. each time.

I'm not for predicting whether a game will be good or not, but I'll go ahead and say that while GTA V will be a good game, it will be criticized for being the same as the past few installments. Then again, who knows?

But yeah, the art being the same isn't that big of a deal to me. It's a trademark in a sense to GTA. It reminds me of a gif I saw recently...

Dead Space 3, Modern Warfare 3, Mass Effect 3, Battlefield 3... all EA games, all with the protagonist holding a gun and walking. But yet again, seeing this is just an analytical perspective on drugs.

GTA box art is iconic in it's own right, but I personally don't care a whole lot about box art; they could make it a black background with the stylized "GTAV" for all I care. as long as the game itself is good.
