As we all know, Grand Theft Auto V will have three different protagonists each with their own stories and -apparently- very different personalities. Today, Rockstar released character trailers for all of them and I have to tell you, much like a mother who's belly is swollen with three babies...I love all of them equally.

It's almost like Rockstar decided to take character elements from GTA III, GTA IV and GTA: San Andreas and smush them all into the same game; instituting the best qualities of each in the process. Michael's seems to be an interesting story of a old-time criminal dealing with getting older while being stuck in suburbia. Franklin's story is reminiscent of San Andreas, and deals with another person coming of age but this time in the process of trying to leave a life of crime. By comparison, Trevor's character seems to be there simply to take up all of the unused crazy from Michael and Franklin. He's a complete madman.

Rockstar is simply fantastic at story telling and characterization, my hope is that the gameplay can follow through. They'll need to do more this time around than the simple “run to this area and kill these guys or fetch this thing” missions that were ever so prevalent in GTA IV. Rockstar has come a long way though. Red Dead Redemption had a much more diverse missions structure and Max Payne 3 showed that they finally have the shooting right.

GTA V might be where it all comes together.

Let's hope the main characters aren't pushovers in GTA V. One of my main issues with the GTA series is the main characters blindly following orders from others and not having their own ideas. Their goals have always been to get out of the life of crime after they do One Last Thing, but being a puppet the entire time. From what is seen here, it looks like at least Trevor does whatever the fuck he wants.

Still can't help but feel worried about Franklin. Rockstar usually IS good with story and characterization... except with San Andreas which, in my opinion as someone from that life, did a shit job at doing that kind of story in that kind of setting, which barely half the game took place in anyway. I don't expect Franklin to leave the ghetto 1/4th into the game to go fly fighter jets for the FBI or break into Area 51 or anything like that, but I'm still worried.

Plus, I'm still hung up on the "gangbanger in a post-gangbanging world" comment Rockstar made about Franklin when these characters were introduced. I'm not even sure what the hell that even means, since gangbanging is still.... kind of a big thing in the modern day. Worst case scenario, "a gangbanger in a post-gangbanging world" could be translated as "this character is completely irrelevant."

I hope my apprehension is proven unnecessary, I really want Franklin's story to be good. He's gotten maybe half the attention of either Michael or Trevor at best. San Andreas did put a lot of doubt into my mind as to whether Rockstar is even capable of telling that kind of story, though.

The story looks like it could be amazing, but I''m still waiting to see some full gameplay. I enjoyed the story of GTA4, but the gameplay really dragged on me. The driving felt great, but the combat was just terrible.
