According to Tetsuya Nomura on Square Enix Merchandise Radio, Final Fantasy Versus XIII is not only still alive, the date for its "next reveal" has been set.
Describing the situation "very delicate," Nomura -director and character designer of both Versus XIII and entries in the Kingdom Hearts series- apologized for 2012's complete lack of announcements from the game, saying "to be honest I talked about sharing new information but wasn’t able to and I want to apologize for that." This seems to imply he was hushed by those working above him, including the now ex-President Yoichi Wada, which is frankly a silly idea, considering investors could have used some of that news right around when Square Enix started bleeding money.
With reasons for the project's silence unknown Versus XIII's fate remains as mysterious as ever, but without specifying exactly when, Nomura assured listeners that "perhaps the details as to why information couldn’t be released might be touched upon with the next information announcement." Could this be the Final Fantasy that Shinji Hashimoto said would be revealed at E3? If we're lucky, maybe.
This is as good a time as any to remind readers that as of this writing, it has been six years, eleven months, and eight days since Final Fantasy Versus XIII is announced. Another fun fact: the entirety of World War II lasted six years and one day. So that's something.

I'm not going to lie, I almost don't have interest anymore... but the Final Fantasy lover in me is crying tears of joy.

I hope they just rename it to Final Fantasy XV. The XIII won't do it good.
I've always been inclined to buy every FF game, but if this one isn't good the FF series is dead to me.

One thing to note is that they've stopped calling it "Versus XIII" and just referring to it as "Versus", so rumors of it being "XV" aren't too far fetched.

I'm just glad that we are getting news of this title, thought for sure this was cancelled.
