Right on the heels of the announcement that Stephen Russell won't be playing Garrett in Thief, it looks like David Hayter's absence from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is confirmed.

Speaking to The Electric Playground, Hayter spoke about his recent letter written to fans and stated that he wanted to make it clear his absence from MGSV wasn't his decision. The voice of Solid Snake and Snake's father, Jack/Naked Snake/Big Boss, in the prequels, Hayter's voice is synonymous with Metal Gear Solid in the minds of fans (including yours truly) and his absence in the newest installment comes as something of a shock. Some believed that his letter, which made a point of indicating April 1, 2013 at the end, was a sign that it was all an elaborate ruse. Electric Playground's interview, however, would seem to show that we will, in fact, have a Hayter-less Snake.

For what it's worth, I'm quite unhappy to hear that he could be gone and would direct others of a similar mindset to this petition, but I kind of feel worse for the actor who has to pick up where Hayter left off. There's fifteen years worth of expectation built into this role; the poor guy is in for the most brutal group of critics he's ever faced.

That, or somewhere along the line this is all a clever trick by series creator Hideo Kojima. Let's be real though, Kojima is an entirely trustworthy person who has never, ever messed with our hearts and minds before.

sad to hear. but i have a theory: i read somewhere, that kojima talked about making remakes of the first two metal gear games. so it might be possible, that the phantom pain will lead right into them. and then it would be a bit akward to hear david hayter twice. i hope, that this might be true.

I'm a little bummed about the whole David Hayter situation as well but not to the point where some people have said they simply won't play the game. I'm very excited for this game and maybe, just maybe Kojima has something up his sleeve that will surprise us, he always does. I don't think this is the end of Hayter voicing Snake.

I want to believe this is an elaborate April Fools, I really do. Since all the other wacky jokes Kojima played for the game has failed. This is his last ditch effort to fool the community, but I might just have to finally accept it.

I've never really thought that the voice acting for Snake was very good. The voice itself is iconic, but he's mostly speaking in a monotone. I will be very interested to see what a new voice actor can bring to the table.

inb4 it's some voice actor trying really hard to immitate David Hayter.

I'm really hoping that they're using a new big boss voice actor and Kojima is just being a douchebag, but since they're going the same route IO interactive went with David Bateson, I think Konami/Kojima Productions subtly dropped David, which is horse droppings. the petition to get him back on the MGS projects is going pretty strong! another 1.5k signatures and it'll be submitted to Kojima San, who will probably not really care, but still will be worth seeing his response to it!

Maybe this isn't big boss. Maybe it is a clone or something that, because of the accident, thinks he is the real big boss. I read a batman comic along time ago that had a similar plot. It starts off with someone who appears to be batman waking up in an alley with amnesia and he starts to try and remember how to be batman. But in the end, the real batman shows up and tells this guy that he was role playing with his wife and accidentally fell out the window. So yeah...maybe.
