I couldn’t NOT play Electronic Super Joy when I stumbled onto its both at PAX East this year, could I? Maybe it had something to do with its thumping house music, or the hot pink esthetics, or the controller-dropping failure I witnessed so many gamers endure during their hands-on demo. Actually, it was all these things that drove my interest in this seizure-inducing, hyper platformer, and gladly so. I would have missed out on one of the coolest platformers on the show-floor.
ESJ instantly reminded me of Super Meat Boy. You die early and often until its tight-controls become comfortable, the art direction stands out in a crowd of 8-bit tile-sets, and the soundtrack is nothing less than stellar. Yet, Electronic Super Joy does enough to prove it wasn’t simply a Team Meat clone by means of level-design and visual flare, I would come to find out.
My hands-on time with ESJ pushed me through side-scrolling levels in panic, struggling to land on platforms barely bigger than the character sprite. Level-design didn’t simply rely on perfecting jumps but also challenged the player through strobing [sic] silhouettes, and a slew of other visual distractions, that rode the soundtrack like hi-hats. To ramp-up the difficulty, rocket-turrets forced me to constantly move about the level while avoiding its attacks.
The game plays wonderfully - once you get a grip on its controls - and shows signs of design brilliance with movement-trails that help inform the player every step of the way. There was a rhythmic Zen present, tying the soundtrack and gameplay together unlike anything on the show floor this year. I may have struggled to get through Electronic Super Joy’s demo but I eventually did, and enjoyed every minute of it. The crowd that watched beyond cheered for my success and, like me, nodded to the kick-drum the entire time.
Expect to see Electronic Super Joy sometime in 2013 on PC/Mac/Linux/iOS/Android. I quite honestly can’t wait.
