Things are reaching a fever pitch regarding the Sony February 20th press conference and now the Wall Street Journal is getting in on the action. According to them and “inside sources” the PS4 will be announced during the upcoming 2/20 press conference and will be released this year.
Some other tidbits from them?
- The unit will be putting a bit more focus on social gaming and “how the user interacts with the console rather than pure hardware”
- Sony considered leaving out an optical drive but decided against that proposition when the PSPGo basically crashed and burned.
- People at Microsoft are currently running around, waving their arms, screaming and throwing miscellaneous papers into the air while this music plays in the background.
OK, I made up that last one. But really that's all I'm going to picture today.
Finally, there have been a lot of rumors for the past few years but I'm feeling like this is the real deal. I would be mostly interested to hear Nintendo's take on this, however. They've said in the past, at least during the lifecycle of the Wii, that they didn't consider MS and Sony to be direct competitors. I wonder if their position has now changed.

Removing the optical drive would have been disastrous. However, rumors of playing non-used games and the almost assured price hike for games will do enough.

I like the last part Joseph..... Its believable. I would say Nintendo is considering them competition now for how the Wii U is now, and is able to play the games that the 360 and Ps3 were able to play. I don't like how it is going to be focus more on "social gaming", but we will never know how it will be till it is out. This is becoming interesting though

Not gonna lie, if they don't up the hardware a decent bit, and price is still in the 400's and not closer to 200 when it launches, thats bullshit and they should all burn in hell. They could push a update to make the UI look different now, and same with social gaming.

I don't know about the "social gaming" aspect. Don't see it apply to me as I don't use my PS3 for social media.
Rumor has it that with their 2/20 announcement of the PS4, it is possible for them to release it this holiday season. Of course, I would be shellshocked if that were the case.

Yeah, whats with the social gaming thing? There are plenty of things that cater to that. Is the PS4 just going to be a relabeled kinect with facebook and twitter apps built in?

Social gaming? Isn't that kind of what they tried to do with Playstation Home? Which as we all know is horrible. I am not sure what they are planning on doing, but I'm almost positive I wont like it.

Do people consider the WiiU to be direct competition to the other consoles any more? I feel like the target audiences are fairly different these days.

I wonder how they will focus on the whole Gaikai thing and market it. That might be their one big weapon against Microsoft.
