Well this is certainly cause for celebration.

Quite unfortunately, Dishonored can be described as a niche game nowadays. A fantastic game. An important game. But certainly not one developed with the broad base of conventional gamers in mind. Luckily it seems that a broad base of gamers have responded and, speaking to Destructoid, Bethesda VP of marketing Pete Hines stated that sales have exceeded expectation, allowing Bethesda to now consider Dishonored a new IP.

"I can tell you that Dishonored is far exceeding our sales expectations, which is especially cool considering it’s new IP facing a host of well-established franchises this quarter," said PR chief Pete Hines. "We did terrific numbers again this past weekend, both in stores and on Steam, where Dishonored was listed as the #1 selling title over the holiday weekend. And Dishonored has really sold well overseas.

"So, we’re very pleased and appreciate all the fans that have supported Dishonored and Arkane. We clearly have a new franchise."

I can't tell you how ecstatic I am at this news. Dishonored, with its open explorative settings, reactionary world and freedom of choice is highly reminiscent of games that I consider a high point of gaming. Games like the Thief series, Deus Ex, and System Shock. Games that presented themselves to the player as grand experiments rather than narrative enforced motifs that simply pushed the character from action to action.

It's anyones guess where the story will take the player next. Arkane Studios crafted a intricate and beautiful world when telling the story of Corvo so anything is possible. Perhaps Emily can grow up to become a female assassin?

I'm really happy that it did well, and right now it's tied with Dragon's Dogma for my GOTY, but I'd prefer if Arkane used the money to start a new IP instead. As much as I would love another Dishonored game (hopefully a bit longer this time around), making a sequel is a waste of their creative potential. Dishonored, Arx Fatalis and Dark Messiah were all very imaginative and unique games, I don't want Arkane to limit themselves by having to make a game purposely similar to something they've already done.

Well deserved. This game is definitely one of the best games I've played this year.

Of course it did well on Steam at $30 (40% off).
