Mirror's Edge

Mirror's Edge is among my favorite original IP's of this generation. The game put players in an exhilerating, first-person, action game but took firearms out of the equation. The amazing concept was supported by an impressive free-running mechanic, a fresh depiction of an oppressed, near-future, utopia, and a color palette that made the game stand out in a crowd. The game was great in concept but fumbled a little bit in its execution. That, coupled with the lackluster marketing campaign, was enough to ensure that the game underperformed when it hit shelves in November of 2008.

With that said, the game was thrilling in a way that few games have been able to mimmick and I have been praying for a sequel ever since. EA has skirted the issue for years and done little more than express interest in revisting the IP. Ben Cousins, who use to run EA's Free-to-Play division, took to twitter today to respond to an article on Eurogamer.net:

"It is general knowledge in the Stockholm dev scene that Mirror's Edge 2 is in production at DICE."

This is of course nothing more than rumors and speculation that can't be confirmed until EA decides to comment (which I doubt they will until they are ready). If you are interested in the franchise, I would encourage everyone to read through the article on Eurogamer for some other interesting tidbits.

The evidence seems to indicate that the sequel exists in some form at DICE but the scope of the project is yet to be seen. I am reluctant to get excited because we have all seen what that can lead to. Beyond Good and Evil 2 is a great example and there is a good chance that Mirror's Edge 2 will share a similar timeline. EA would be wise to keep a keen eye on the interests of their consumers since nobody wants to see a studio, especially one as talented as DICE, bottlenecked into developing the same game over and over.

The sad thing is that EA has a wonderful marketing tool in their hands with Battlefield 4 which is slated for release sometime in 2013. All it would take to provide a strong push for the sales of Mirror's Edge 2 would be to package a demo with retail copies of Battlefield 4. I doubt this will happen but hopefully EA can use a little bit of their business sense to cook up some marketing ideas that will help catapult this beloved IP to the forefront and prevent their star studio from becoming creatively bankrupt.

I bet they have it in the form of a tech demo. I think they have a good idea what the single player will be. It is just what will they do about multiplayer and can they convince ppl to shell out $60. Got to remember this is EA...and we all know what their approach to making games is, rite?

I would love to see a sequel but I just hope they wont fuck up the original's formula for the goal to apeal a broad audience.

There were strong rumors for a while that EA will be using Frostbite 2 engine in Mirror's Edge design.

I've been hoping for a sequel forever. All I request is that they ditch the flash animation cutscenes & put some more work into the story. Everything else was just perfect, the mechanics, visuals & sound were so fresh & memorable. It was just such a magical game. Can't wait to replay it again. :D
