I'm not one for MMO's at this point in my gaming life, and it's partly for that reason I watched most of Zenimax Online's recent introductory video to Elder Scrolls Online without much excitement. Sure, being able to wind my way through all the continents of Tamriel has its allure, and the combat was presented as more action oriented than you might expect, but things like a hidden HUD -surely for hiding the fact that cooldowns are in the game- and the usual raid information was not making me very keen on this particular title.

Then I hit 7:30 into the video where they started talking about large-scale PVP wars with three factions fighting for the control of Cyrodiil...and then Trebuchets came out.

Now this is what I'm talking about. Large scale PVP battles -hundreds of players by Zenimax's description- fighting with siege weapons. Attacking castles with breakable walls. Players charging in. Quickly, a few thoughts race through my mind. Can the computer handle it? Can the server handle it? That all remains to be seen but this is certainly MMO PVP of the type that has been much more interested than I was before. And though I may still need some spice to get me to sign up, I'm paying attention.

I'm not sure how excited I am about this yet. On one hand I am very excited about what they said it was like but from what I saw it doesn't look like the case. They said the combat was very elder scrolls but when they showed it, it looked alot like every other standard mmo. Just standing in one place hitting buttons, not that elder scrolls melee combat is particularly engaging anyway but I was expecting to see more movement. The class system sounds really interesting if it has an organic flow to it but I have a feeling it'll be more like pick starting class, pick armor, pick weapon, you are now this subclass of said starter class. I have high hopes for the pvp. To this day I still think warhammer online had some of the best pvp around. It felt very real that you would attack a keep and have to use a battering ram to get into the door all while archers are pelting you and pouring boiling pitch on your head. If they can capture the feeling I had while playing that game I'll be happy. I think what I'm most interested to see is the landscape. Considering that Cyrodil is the pvp area, I wonder if I could take a stroll down south and find Seyda Neen or head over to Balmora and see if it is there. I don't follow any kind of elder scrolls lore, time wise, so I don't know if these areas exist in the games timeline but they could really tickle my nostalgia bone if they play their cards right.

All said, I am an avid mmo player and I'm always looking out for the next great mmo so I will probably play it regardless of what I hear, bad or good.

I have to say, they're slowly wining me over. It seems like they really are trying hard to keep the core things that make the Elder Scrolls unique.

This actually looks way better than I expected. But I really don't like what they are doing with the servers, it sounds like there will be alot of "sub channels" and stuff like that. I really really hate this in MMORPGs... And I really hope they let you change the body types, all the characters in the video look skinny as fuck.

At least they're trying to take this one away from the typical hotbar macro MMO thing. I can still see the semi-turn-based combat from those, though. Plus, the unified server thing is pretty nice, it's just gonna need a serious backend to keep it going. I'm just wondering pricing model and how that will work out.
