A new survival-horror game, Outlast (yes not OutCAST) has just been announced by new development house Red Barrels. Of course we always get excited about a new horror game here at 4Player, but this one is of particular interest because Red Barrels is a studio founded by industry veterans from Ubisoft and Naughty Dog. Two studios that carry a good amount of weight with their name.

Outlast tells the story of independent journalist Miles Upshur, who breaks into a long-abandoned asylum (really never a good idea) on a tip. It's not much, I know, but that sets us up...and god damn if hospitals and asylums aren't creepy places.

From the Press Release:

In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the "research and charity" branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, has been operating in strict secrecy... until now.

Acting on a tip from an inside source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility, and what he discovers walks a terrifying line being science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.

“There are already a lot of great games out there about terrifying monsters that eat brains; we want Outlast’s to be scary because you’ll know the enemies you face still have them,” said Philippe Morin, co-founder of Red Barrels.

“Our team has a lot of previous experience creating big, blockbuster games,” said co-founder David Chateauneuf. “We’re all really excited to see what kind of fear-based emotional rollercoaster we can build on our own!”

I'll admit that I am hoping for a much meater story to be announced, but this only the first we're hearing of this and I'm sure they don't want to let the entire cat out of the bag just yet. The big takeaway here? New studio with great talent making a game we can scream to. I'll get behind that.

Outlast is currently slated for a 2013 release as digital download on PC.

Looks like FEAR and Condemned's bastard son. The trailer kinda made me roll my eyes. It's still too early to judge this title, but I can't say I'm hyped. Not hyped at all.

Well, I can't say that I'm hyped about it, but I'm hoping it will be good.

I'm glad there are still developers out there trying to cater to the horror genre after the abysmal experience from re6 perhaps this game can renew my faith in the genre

Will Brad be doing a Trailer Talk anytime soon? I used to enjoy them for this kind of stuff.

Looks interesting and having recently got into PC gaming again,

No we just need to find out if this is actual Survival Horror or just something where the name was used.
