Happy Halloween!  While the industry kind of let us down this year when it comes to horror games it appears that the indie scene seems intent to provide us with some footage of a few upcoming double-underwear imperative titles.  The first one, from Outlast, is the promised gameplay footage trailer that was mentioned in the teaser a few weeks back.

For the unitiated, let me bring you up to speed on the story. You play as Miles Upshur, an independent journalist who, on a tip, visits the Mount Massive Asylum only to find it overrun by its patients.  Trapped inside and hunted by insane, Miles must survive as long as he can and uncover the conspiracy behind the take over and the experiments committed on its occupants.

Take a look at the trailer below.

Outlast wasn't the only indie title to tease a bowel-unobstruction level of scariness today as Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs got a trailer as well.  As you might be aware, Frictional Games, the guys behind The Dark Descent, are not working on this sequel and have handed off the reigns to thechineseroom, developer behind Dear Ester, for this particular title.  Not much is known about the new Amnesia other than it isn't a direct sequel to The Dark Descent and that it involves some kind of pig monster thing but it still looks enticing.

Here's the new trailer for you to, dare I say, squeel over.

Both titles arrive on the PC next Summer.  Consider me excited, especially after a certain, er, recent lackluster affair.

    *Maybe Amnesia Spoilers Ahead*

There were only a couple things wrong with Amnesia in my opinion. The biggest thing to me was that enemies disappeared after a short time aside from one instance in the game. Once you figured this out it took alot of tension away because you knew you were safe if you just sat in a corner for a couple minutes. The other problem I found was with the musical cues. I was unfortunate to pick up on this early on. If you catch on to it early you know exactly when a monster is still around and when it's safe to come out of hiding based on music alone. I hope Machine For Pigs can correct these little nitpicks I have because I think it will be even scarier. That said I love Amnesia in spite of its flaws and am hyped for MFP.

As for Outlast I really don't know what to expect really. It seems that it is taking the route of no weaponry and focused on hiding which is almost always more effective at generating horror. I was sort of indifferent until the night vision camera was used and now it has me very interested.

I haven't heard of Outlast, but I'm glad to see this trailer, looks pretty good. The new Amnesia game is looking brilliant. I'm glad we haven't seen much of the monster yet in the trailers, I'm very much looking forward to playing the game for the first time and freaking the fuck out upon first sighting of the grunting pig...guy... thing. Looking forward to playing one hell of a scary game :D
