New Super Smash Bros. Unlikely To Feature New Characters

Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of Super Smash Bros, has said that the character roster of the series has "probably already reached the limit of what's feasible," in an interview with Nintendo Power (via Nintendo Everything).

Discussing the new Super Smash Bros, he said:

It isn’t a matter of ‘if the next game has 50 characters, that’ll be enough.’ There is a certain charm to games that have huge casts of playable characters, but they tend to have issues with game balance and it becomes very difficult to fine-tune each character and have them all feel distinctive…. In terms of quantity, we’ve probably already reached the limit of what’s feasible. I think a change of direction may be what’s needed.

This is good news for people like me who were irked by the obvious clone characters in Smash Bros. Melee and Brawl. Also, the more focus they can put on balancing, the better. I grew up playing Smash Bros. Melee with a group of friends who would all be either Marth, Fox, or Captain Falcon every single time, and would dupe new players into thinking Pichu was the best character and then thrash them so hard they never wanted to play the game again.

Plus, they would always choose the Hyrule Temple stage. Ah, what fond, horrible memories.

Nintendo, bringing innovation to whole new levels.....oh wait...have they even got characters they could add in there? Nothing new that is for sure

I have to say I'm fine with this. Really, there's only so many characters a game can have before they start blending together. If Nintendo wants to take the existing character mechanics and move sets and just fine tune them, I am all for it.

Why not get creative and make some unique characters for the SSB series itself? And by unique I mean brand new, not some bizarre/gimmicky clone or quasi-facet of an already existing character's personality.

What characters could they add? It's not like they ever create any interesting characters or new IPs or anything like that.

All I want added is Megaman damnit, but since he is already in Marvel vs Capcom that probably won't happen.

I'm cool with this, every smash bros game I always pick the same dudes anyway when I play seriously, everyone else was just for party fun

Lol, balance.. Like Meta Knight and Shiek didn't royally ruin any sense of balance.

I loved the massive roster, personally.
Now, I played with people that switched up characters between every match, played on a wide range of maps, tried to play 'fun' instead of 'to win,' and enjoyed perfecting the differences between 'clone' characters...

If the next SSB had 50 characters, and lets say 10 of those are clones, I'd probably be pretty content as long as the gameplay doesn't suffer for it.

Well at least Sakurai has noticed one problem about Brawl. Less, better characters and hopefully the gameplay will be good this time.

I'll buy it if it has Hyrule Temple. That shit was rad.

All I really wanted was someone from Golden Sun, likely Isaac. I'm aware he was an assist trophy thingy, but I think he or another character might have had some potential as a character.
