As this current console generation is slowly coming to a close, I keep hearing people say "Well we've probably come as far as we can technology wise. Whats left?" And to that, I send them this video in response.

This is soft-body physics, which is usually employed by high-end computer simulations and can span the gamut of materials from cloth, to metals and to anything else that simulation tests need to be run on. It's also used in the free-to-play simulation playground Rigs-of-Rods if you feel like playing around with it.

That, however, pales in comparison to that same technology running in real time in Cryengine 3.

Check out the video below yourself. None of it is pre-rendered, and gives us a glimpse of the type of damage modeling we will start to see in the next generation of games. I've been calling for a new generation for about a year now...this just makes me even more excited.

With development costs already skyrocketing I think the next generation needs to take it's time and be more developer friendly than any previous generation. The industry only runs a risk of imploding (again) if we believe that we can just have constant expansion and boom with no bust. So let's hope 599 US Dollars never happens again.

This was all great and good to see, I mean before this I thought that the damage model for cars in GTA4 was the best out there, but all they showed was one dynamic model colliding with a static model. I would love to see them crash a couple of dynamic models together and let us see if they would twist and contort and get stuck together like cars seem to do in real life at relativley high speeds.

But apart from that little critic from me I like what I see, and I do agree with Joseph that a new consol generation is very much do. If developers can make games like BF3 or Gears of war run on something not even toting a gig of ram I would love to see what they could do with proper computer specs. RAM is cheap, 8gigs you can find for about $60 bucks depending on who makes it, and AMD just released a quad core running at 4.20GHz (4.30GHz on turbo) CPU for only $140 so good specs are not going to kill us running the system at $599 USD.

However with that said I don't want them rushing these out the doors too fast. The next console generation I think should get here around 2014, developers are now comfortable and know how to make great games on the present generation of consoles, Dragon's Dogma enter stage right, so I say let them have a couple of golden years to wash over the present generation and put out a couple more games that show us just how much further they can push the present generation.

just give me a reliable, long lasting machine with decent graphics and internet capability and I'll be happy. Something like the PS2 era, maybe. Could care less about stunning visuals, as long as the machine is made with the consumer's happiness in mind, not the money.

Just stick a mini joseph christ in every next generation xbox. That'll be all the processing power you'll ever need.

...and I was about to comment on AI. I would rather see their resources spend on developing better AI for single player games. While visuals progressed exponentially, AI in games is still just above Doom 1. Even in games like Deus Ex, AI is just fucking stupid and stealth game-play bores me to death because it's so damn easy. Skyrim is another example, I can go on and on.
Crashes in games like Grid already look fine as it is.

What reason will anybody have to go outside? With graphics like these we could all just simulate our lives without having to actually go outside!

Looks amazing, but with the way the truck crumpled in the collisions, the tires really started sticking out to me. I think that's where the real potential would have been to show this kind of tech off with. The tires as they are in the demo just kinda clip through things rather than being physically effected by them. I mean sure, the wheels move and bounce and shift with the weight of the truck and react naturally in regards to it's suspension, but the wheels themselves are kind of just... there.

But that's just me being nit-picky for now. I can't wait for the next gen, I'm really getting tired of naysayers trying to downplay the value of pushing and advancing physics & graphics engines as well as the hardware to support them. Without periodic technological advancement, stagnation will occur. Competition will sour from to many similar products being released, while the ambitiously unique and creative ventures will be limited by the resources they have to work with.

I remember first getting PS3 and playing Motorstorm and just crashing around in that game and I thought that was just the most awesome thing. And now there's going to be a next generation to improve off of that.

    Gotta love technology.

I seriously hope the industry doesn't get concerned only with graphic power but with great story, good AI and other factors that makes a game stay away from the bargain bin. Otherwise we'll have plenty of pretty but shitty games in the next gen.

Now Imagine "carmeggedon" mod with this engine in GTA. Oh god...the car parts everywhereee. Although, I suppose this means no more Warthog jousting that used to happen back in the days of indestructible warthogs in Halo.
