There has been a good amount of Twitter buzz today for Among the Sleep, a horror game where you play from the perspective of a two year old.
The official description of the game reads: "In Among the Sleep you take on the role of a young child. You have yet to develop a full sense of reality, making you weak and susceptible to the horrifying creatures inhabiting your nightmares. One particular night a dramatic event occurs, forcing you to flee from your home and enter a surreal world. Only accompanied by Teddy, you must overcome many hardships to stay alive and find a way home."
You can get a pretty good sense of the perspective from the trailer below, and I must say that something about it really adds to the fear factor of the entire thing. Playing from the perspective of something so defenseless, so small, really puts on another layer that we haven't seen before.
The game is currently in development at Norweigan developer Krillbrite Studio, and is set for a 2013 release on MAC and PC. I'm sure we'll be talking a lot more about this game as time moves on.

This looks awesome. I was actually just thinking that's it been a while since I've been truly horrified by a game, but this might be the one to shut me up!

I like the idea of playing on the base fears that most humans experience in their lives. Being afraid of the dark, strange noises, things moving on their own. Most people have been or currently are afraid of, and the perspective that the game is presented in only serves to amplify that. A great take on the formula for sure.
That being said I question how good of a gameplay experience is going to be delivered here. I understand that horror games are all about atmosphere and delivering an experience rather than a complete gameplay experience. I'm ok with that, but that may be why I've never been a big fan of this genre. The scares are nice, but I'm always left feeling empty.
I hope this title is able to deliver more to the genre than a lower camera perspective.

So the protagonist is a two year old... Can you die in this game? Because to me, you need the feeling of doom and traumatic experience if want it to be call horror.
I think we need to put different categories, because horror is way too easily used.
Categories like: Surprise, Comedy, Brad playing Fatal Frame (meaning your laughing at someone getting scared), Spooky, Scary, Frightening, peeing in your pants, looking over your shoulders, nightmarish, disturbing, traumatic, WTF, Fatal Frame, lost of collective shit, Why are you making me watch this, i hate you, fuck no, take my girlfriend, kill me now, give me the shotgun, heart attack, sudden death.
I would say this game is more spooky than scary and i'll admit its because of the two year old. Lets face it, it's obvious they're not going to cross the line. Even so... It still looks like an interesting game and i hope we get to hear more from it.
