The fate of Prey 2 has been a mystery for weeks since the rumor of its cancellation began to circulate. After awarding the game our Game of Show at E3 last year, we were awfully worried that Bethesda may have shelved the game in favor of focusing on other titles such as Dishonored. That mystery has finally been addressed by Bethesda PR. The email I received this morning contained the following statement:

Development of Prey 2 has not been cancelled but the game will not be released in 2012 as planned. The delay is due to the fact that game development has not progressed satisfactorily this past year, and the game does not currently meet our quality standards. Prey 2 has shown great promise and we regret disappointing our fans. We have made a substantial investment in game development to deliver the experience fans want. We are determined only to release the AAA game that fans rightfully expect, and are unwilling to compromise our quality standards to meet a release schedule.

Consider myself relieved and disappointed. I am pleased to hear that development continues but it is a shame that the game won't see the light of day this year. The question now becomes whether or not the game will undergo major conceptual changes or if the game that eventually launches will resemble the game we have fallen in love with. Only time will tell, but for now, I will breath a sigh of relief.

I'm getting heavy hints of a developer change. Unless they specifically say Human Head is still working on it, I won't hold my breath. It would seem pretty logical for a publisher to do so (even though it is lame, stupid, and asshole-ish). The game wasn't going as planned and the publisher switches to a developer that can meet deadlines.

If that's the case, I will still be worried for what kind of product Prey 2 will become. For now, all we can do is wait.

I would hate it if they decided to change the type of gameplay but I am thankful it's being pushed back. One less game I need to get this year...

I think it's a smart move. Prey 2 has a surprising amount of similarities with Dishonored (first person parkour, RPG style abilities and decision making, bounty hunting and assassinations, fairly dystopic settings, etc.) and they should wait as long as possible before releasing one after the other. It's a shame I don't get to play it earlier, but the year is busy as it is, so I'm not too upset.

I'm relieved they are still working on it and I'm glad they push up the date for improvements.

I would've preferred it if Prey 2 WAS canceled, lest it get the Duke Nukem treatment.

Now that I looked at more stuff on Dishonored and how similar both games look and the fact that they are both being published by Bethesda I'm starting to wonder if any of this news has to do with that.
