After a month delay, Monolith's quirky FPS Gotham City Impostors will be arriving next week. For those who don't know, Imposters is a lighthearted multiplayer shooter based on the Batman universe where players take on the roles of normal citizens who have decided to try and become superheroes or super villains themselves.

It's quite the departure for Monolith who are responsible for creating the F.E.A.R. series, and the announcement of Gotham City Impostors last year ended the torrent of speculation surrounding some 'mystery project'  they were working on after giving F.E.A.R. over to Day 1 Studios.

F.E.A.R. was an immensely popular and celebrated series -at least for the first 2 games- but I'm not so sure how well Imposters will do in the current market. With Battlefield 3 and Modern Warefare 3 recently released, and now a Twisted Metal demo adding an entirely new landscape to the multiplayer shooter arena, it'll be interesting to see if people can find some space in their heart for what Imposters has to offer.

In my opinion, they probably should. Impostors isn't really your run-of-the-mill shooter, and actually has a lot more in common with an older Monolith title, The Operative: No One Lives Forever than anything that is on the market today.  With gadget type weapons and abilities, levels that have a large amount of verticality, and that aforementioned caricaturization of the world in general, there is a lot in Impostors to love. Unfortunately I have a feeling that it'll be hard for it to find a place in the market today, and we may be reading in a few weeks that sales of the download title have been far below expectation.  If Monolith, however, could take some of these ideas and use them in a new No One Lives Forever game...that could be something that gamers could get their teeth on.

Gotham City Impostors is available as a download title on PS3 and PC on February 7th, and XBLA on February 8th. You can watch the trailer for the game below.

This looks like a game I'd like to play. Is it coming out on Steam for PC?

Interesting objective based team games are always on my good side. This one seems to have a strange concept, but nonetheless a fun detraction from all of those *serious* shooters out there.

I played the beta and it definitely is different from what I was expecting. It's actually really fun to play and adds a good feeling of silliness to the experience.

This is such a fun game with a great art style and KICK ASS gadgets.
My only concern is if it will maintain an online community.

I am all over this game. I can't wait to get it. Feb 7 is going to be one busy gaming day, what with the Simpsons arcade also coming out that day.
