Rumor is circulating by a Ubisoft insider that the next Assassin's Creed game might be taking place during the time of the American Revolution.

CVG reported the news today, and stated that the reveal would occur at some point before the end of Ubisoft's fiscal year on March 31. They also point to various hints found in previous Assassin's Creed games including,

    • Code in the  'Da Vinci Disappearance' DLC, which gave players a set of coordinates leading to New York state;
    • A part of Assassins Creed lore which states that Washington holds one of the Apples of Eden;
    • And a Ubisoft survey last year which asked players how they would feel about the next installment of the series taking place during "The confrontation between British colonists and native Americans during The American Revolution."

The new location would be quite the departure from the ancient European setting we've been seeing so far, and even though it isn't the Industrial Revolution London setting I've been pitching for awhile now, it may be different enough to pull me back into the series. It also allows for a modernization of the series without the difficulties with game mechanics that contemporary guns would provide. Muskets, which are shot once and take a fortnight to reload, would balance out nicely with the Assassin techniques we've come to expect from the series.

And maybe this is a bit of nationalism coming out of me, but I'm interested to see how the developers would deal with America's founders. Is Washington a badass? Would Lincoln cut some bitches? (Civil War, I know, but these games tend to jump around a bit). And how would they handle slavery? Surely it's something they couldn't just not include. So how would they handle the sometimes delicate reality that the founders of America owned, and had children with, African American slaves?

There is a lot here to chew on and expect us to be writing a lot more about the next installment of Assassin's Creed in the future. As for now, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

    It would make logical sense with Desmond being an American and all that the timeline led to America at some point. I could see them doing the sort of 'return to specific locations in the modern days for clues' stuff, like they did with the colluseum and such. New York as a settlement and surrounding areas in the past, and New York in its current form with Desmond.

    I also read somewhere that the clue at the very end of Assassin's Creed 2 lead to American Revolution setting. Where they mention '2 symbols which only come together in 1 place'. Well apparently they actually come together in 2 places, one being a French piece of documentation/legislation and the other, an American Declaration,

    However, I would love to see Industrial Revolution London too Joseph, they could quite easily work in a character who could be the inspiration for the Sherlock Holmes stories, who supplied the protagonist with contraptions and clues and a few cool steampunk tools.

    Also I'd like to learn more of Shao Jun from Assassin's Creed Embers, but I think they might leave that to comics and books.

    Interesting. I don't know much about the American Revolution, not exactly taught in schools here in New Zealand. But what did the settlements and cities look like, construction wise? Would parkour still fit? I'm imagining it like a spiderman game that isn't in new york.

    This is what they should have done as soon as 2 was finished, Assasin's Creed is at its best when it's doing something new, not recycling the earlier games like it did with Brotherhood and Revelations.

    I think this setting for Assassins Creed sounds pretty cool, especially since not many video games use it.

    I think I'd be into it. I find the period very interesting and I I've been tired of that Ezio guy. The new guy will probably be called Sam or John or something.

    Can't say it's my ideal choice, I'd much prefer the next game taking place during the English or French revolutions, but I'm looking forward to seeing Jefferson.

    Huh, interesting. They can do some really interesting stuff with the sort of time period. I guess we will have to see how it goes.

    Thank god. Even though the setting might be the best, at least the series is moving on from Ezio and Italy.

    At this rate, AC is going to take backdrop into the future!

    That's right, we're talking about the future...the future!

    So we're gonna have free running in small farm communities? I really have trouble picturing it, but okay...

    Still would prefer Industrial Rev. London. God that would have been sexy. Jack the Ripper is an ex-Assassin turned crazed murderer, perhaps? Damn...

    Between the relationships with slaves and the relationships with Native Americans, there's a lot of potential for some really controversial storytelling (depending on how true to history they want to keep it).

    I won't play it, since I'm just not into the Assassin's Creed series, but I'll pay attention to what people have to say about it.

    What this series really needs is dinosaurs, and space.

    My biggest question is what type of character are we going to be playing as? According to what Joseph has here it may very well be a Native American character, which would fit with the style of gameplay I think. I'm also concerned with how they would handle the treatment of Native Americans and the African Slaves. This setting (it it is indeed what we'll get) could work very well. Lots of sensitive issues surround this era and I hope they treat them respectfully and with tact.

    I agree with shiloh. And I have always wanted to play a game based on the American Revolution.

    I can't imagine the shit storm that would come down from a possible black slavery aspect. Not deserving it of course, but people are stupid

    I'm not into Assassin’s Creed. But I remember on Cocktail Time, you and Bob were guessing "Mars" or "the far future" (places where man-sized trash cans might not exist) for the next installment, and that got me interested. Space colony would be cool, but the American Revolution... now I'm really excited to see how this will turn out!

    eh...to be honest this isnt that exciting to me. Mostly because I was hoping for the modern desmond to finally be the main character and no more.."ohh u cant go there invisible wall because u dont have that memory....Animus!!!" I mean i bet you they will make another one set in the same time period...maybe even two.

    I just hope Ubisoft focuses more on singleplayer, especially since Revelations was easy to zoom through. Needs more missions, tombs/churches, and puzzles.

    it would be cool if there were bonus games where you can free slaves and kill slave owners..........kinda like the Chapelle Show when the Haters went back in time shot that slave owner in sloooooooooooooow motion.

    Damn, I was hoping they would move back to maybe an Egyptian or Chinese setting, and not move further in the future. Regardless though, it's nice to see something different.

    An Asian setting would be interesting too, but i'd still be satisfied regardless as long as they moved out of the eastern European/middle east setting.
