People are reporting continued problems with the PS3 version of Skyrim post-patch, and though Bethesda has claimed to be looking further into the issue, site Digital Foundry claims that the problem may be with the game infrastructure itself.

Even post-post patch people have been experiencing continued framerate drops, oversized save files and other anomalies. Tom Morgan from Digital Foundry has reported that the problem may be with the way Skyrim approaches memory management in general.

"The bottom line is that Skyrim is an unbounded game world running on a space-constricted system - and this applies regardless of the platform you play it on, hence reports of the PC version running out of address space and displaying solid colours instead of textures...The PlayStation 3 is unfortunate in that it's the platform with the most oppressive RAM issues (in addition to the split-pool set-up of the memory, the OS has a larger footprint than its 360 equivalent) so it makes sense that it has the most noticeable issues."

They later added that during their 65-hr playthrough..."It's the first time our performance analysis tools have ever recorded a 0FPS reading."

There is a workaround however. Simply playing for shorter bursts, saving and reloading the game clears out many of the problems. And since none of us is really going to be playing for 65 hrs straight I doubt any of us will ever see that dreaded oFPS reading.

It's something to consider as you make your way through the world of Skyrim and see those textures start to look a little bland. Though it's not a multiplayer game, you're not alone.

the game informer article didnt mention the little workaround, so as a ps3 skyrim player (also pc btw) I appreciate the tip there!
I guess it's the fallout: new vegas issue where playing the game for too long in a stretch would make the load times unbearably slow

On the 360 end of things, i noticed a few texture improvements with the install, but now none of my items enchanted with resistances do anything, as proven by my highly scientific test of wearing a total of 100% fire resist from items and standing in a dragon's face :V

The 1.2 patch is known to be bugged and Bethesda said they will be releasing a patch to rectify this, this week. I haven't had any frame rate or memory issues on PC throughout my entire 50 hour play-through before the 1.2 patch.

I had no issues on PC (unlike majority) until I replaced compressed textures with high rez texture mods. After playing for a while the game would start losing textures and eventually crash. If that happens to you and you're running x64 system get 4GB Skyrim: www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1013 It lets Skyrim use more than 2GB of memory, works well.

On the contrary, my game runs smoother after the patch. I'm a level 41 Brenton 55+ hours in. My save file was over 1MB. Before the patch the game would drop to literally single frames after about 2 hours or more of gameplay. Since the patch my main save has gone down to about 9000 KB and haven't noticed any significant lag or frame drops. But hey, I wouldn't mind another patch. They should make Dragons breathe rainbows and junk.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from everything I'm reading from different articles, it seems like this is a problem that might be impossible to avoid due to the PS3's hardware. They might be able to fix some of the smaller bugs, but the freezing and save file issues seem almost unavoidable.

Thankfully the great play hasn't affected my game play in Skyrim. These Bethesda patches att to be greatly feared and should be downloaded with caution!
