South Park: The Game

Yes, you read that right.  Revealed as the cover story in the December issue of Game Informer, South Park, a franchise synonymous with crude, critical humor and a staple of American television for well over a decade, is getting its first major console release since the days of the Nintendo 64.  What's more interesting about this is that it is an RPG title being developed by Obsidian Entertainment.

While details as to what the game really is at this point are scarce the initial tidbits are actually kinda promising.  Playing as a custom-created character, you are tasked with saving South Park from the various threats that come its way in a full RPG experience.  Unlike the previous South Park games that have come our way this one actually sounds like it could deliver on what a South Park game really could (and should) be.  Considering the amount of strange adventures the main cast gets into an RPG sounds like the perfect genre for such a title.

What has me worried though is the fact that Obsidian is developing it.  Simply put (and this is just my opinion) I really just don't trust the company.  Sure, they have a decent track record of taking other companies' IPs and technology and creating experiences based around them but when it comes to an internally-developed title they haven't done so well.  That, and each title they've developed over the past decade has had some questionable design choices in it.  KOTOR II The Sith Lords had entire planets and quests cut form the final game, Fallout New Vegas was filled to the brim with invisible walls and Alpha Protocol... well, it speaks for itself.

One can only hope that Obsidian can deliver on a South Park experience but they need a close eye kept on them.

I want this to be so good! I really do! But like you said Chris, Obsidian developing it worries me.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone are still writing it, so that's a plus. I kind of hope it is set up like the old fallout games.

Meh, I thought Alpha Protocol was a great game and I MUCH preferred New Vegas to Fallout 3. I'll agree on KOTOR II but that was 6 years ago.

I'm pretty damn excited for this game.

Funny how after i've beaten Alpha Protocol, I read this article and couldn't remember who obsidian was. I've already seen the horrors of South Park Rally so i'm skeptical about this. South Park already has 2 strikes as a Racer and an FPS. This might be Strike 3, although it does look like the 3rd time will be the charm. Another wait and see for me.

I wasn't sure I read that right, a South Park RPG made by the makers of Fallout: New Vegas, but then I read it again. This sounds... interesting to say the least, but I'm not ready to make heads or tales of this... thing... until they release some more details.

Never liked South Park, its gonna be a shitty game. Waste of 60 dollars

I dunno...The franchise alone hints that this will not be a worthy $60 game. Sounds better for it to be a downloadable game. Who knows...it could be the next big hit like Castle Crashers.

Having seen the writing of some of the more recent episodes of the show and their broadway "Mormon" show doing good, I'm a bit nervous and excited for this.

This better be good. Rather, it HAS to be good for it to not suck. Wait...let me put it another way. It has to be REALLY good for it to not suck. Basically, the South Park ship has sailed in terms of big mainstream popularity, and unless this game is fairly amazing it's not going to be able to break through that.

We don't need another Simpson's movie debacle.

I've never liked South Park but this sounds odd enough that it just might work.

Didn't know South Park was still popular enough to create a game around.

Also it's kind of unfair to blame Obsidian for the problems in KOTOR 2 since Lucas Arts forced them to push up the release date months ahead of when it was supposed to just to hit the holidays.

I'm not sure I understand how Alpha Protocol was a bad example for Obsidian Entertainment. I like that game quite a bit, and it reminded me of the days where games weren't needlessly polished to all ends. In fact, it reminded me a lot of Mass Effect, easily one of the best roleplaying games on consoles.

A free-roaming South Park WRPG sounds awesome. It has a lot of potential, but it's going to be very easy to fuck it up.

I'm guessing character creation will be a big draw. Choose your hat's colour wisely.
