Rainbow Six Patriots

As you can probably guess by now you know I'm a shooter fan.  While I enjoy staples like Call of Duty and Battlefield with the occasional Rage or Crysis thrown in the mix I've always had a special place in my heart for the Tom Clancy franchise.  Clancy fans like myself have had quite a good run this generation with three Ghost Recon titles and two of each from the Splinter Cell and Rainbow Six series.  Rainbow Six in particular however has been absent from the gaming scene since 2008 after the entertaining yet re-hashed Vegas 2.  With Sam Fisher and the Ghosts getting their dues recently it's about time that we saw the return of John Clark and Domingo Chavez's unit.

Patriots was actually leaked back in June when a cut concept video was posted before quickly being taken down.  Today however Ubisoft felt it was time to give up the ghost and revealed the truth.  The cover story for December 2011's issue of Game Informer, Patriots takes place in New York where a domestic terrorist group (no doubt modeled on Splinter Cell Double Agent's John Brown Army modernized on today's Tea Party) is wreaking havoc.  Little is known about the game other than the fact that you'll have to make choices in the game that are definitely not black and white in their outcomes.

You can watch the concept footage presented by Ubisoft here.  We'll try and get it up to you as soon as we can.  I'm also including the cover art for the December issue which should be hitting mailboxes relatively soon.

Anybody else a Rainbow Six fan?  I have some very fond memories from the early days of Xbox Live in Black Arrow but I really enjoyed Vegas 1.  Tactical shooters aren't nearly as popular as their Michael Bay-esque counterparts but I think it could be a great holdover title between 2012 and 2013's major shooter titles.

While I remember the days of Rainbow Six and Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear vividly, I can't imagine the franchise being as deep, strategic, or tactical as they once were. Frozen Synapse has taken those gameplay elements for their own, and have done it so well. This brings up the question: Will Rainbow Six games, or any of the Tom Clancy franchises break any kind of new ground? Rainbow Six: Vegas was fine in its own way, and I'm glad it was made, but military shooters need to change in a dramatic way. Rainbow Six: Patriot needs to stand-out in some way like it did when the franchise was fresh.

RSV1 was definitely one of the games that got me into competitive multiplayer, and also coop with some friends. Definitely a very slow moving game, but had plently of elements to it that made it great. Also terrorist hunt made me happy....

I remember playing rainbow 6 vegas 2 which was really fun, I would have played it a lot but that was when CoD4 was hot and I never really played any tom clancy games so I stayed away from it. This could be good (even though another FPS is the last thing gamers need) as long as they don't try to make it like cod ( with killstreaks, perks, etc etc..) This is fps right? =|

nice write up but i have a quick question.
Why in any way would you link the tea party to terrorism? last time i checked it was those bums in occupy wall-street doing all the terrorizing.
fun fact John browns army was all up in arms against corporations and greed and what not and they sound more like the communist terrorists of the 1990s.
on the game its self, i have always loved rainbow six and still pop in black arrow every now and again so in short im really exited already about the prospect of a new game.

I first played Rainbow Six on PS1 and then got into the Vegas games. I was wondering what was going on with this series since it has been a while since the last game came out. They could go back to their roots if they want to stand out from other FPS games.

What I found most interesting about this trailer was the completely amoral behavior. Shooting police officers, unflinchingly sacrificing an innocent man for the sake of thousands. Definitely made me uncomfortable, since I'm used to at least having an option and not being forced to act this way in a situation. Definitely curious to see if this continues.

How funny, I was just wondering why modern shooters were sort of substituting real-life terrorism by giving it a fake name. I mean, if you're that keen to put it in your game, why wouldn't you fully support the fact that you're trying to send out a message with it? All that fake stuff just comes out lazy and uninspired. I hope Patriots here takes the initiative and starts dealing with some real-life situations.
