Battlefield 3

We are but hours away from the release of one of the most anticipated titles of the year and hundreds of thousands of eager, possibly drooling gamers are ready to get their game on when Dice's latest game hits store shelves.  Battlefield 3 has the distinction of being two things: the first core, un-subtitled entry in the series to arrive on a home console as well as the first major competition the Call of Duty series has had for, well most of this generation.  The definitive Battlefield 3 experience will be on the PC but for those looking to kill thousands of evil, evil Russians on the 360 there's something you should know.

As many of you are probably aware EA has advised that 360 owners who purchase Battlefield 3 should install the game to their hard drive.  They have stated that not doing so would render poor quality textures due to the Frostbite 2.0 engine's focus on texture streaming for a more visceral, good looking experience.  What we didn't know however was the degree of difference between the basic version and the installed version.  That is, until now.

The folks over at WikiGameGuides were able to compile a texture comparison video to show the difference and I gotta say that it is quite a stark one.  Check out the video below and if you've been holding off on getting a hard drive for your console for some strange reason this might be the straw that breaks the camel's back.

[UPDATE]  Just to clarify some issues, the high resolution texture package is included on the multiplayer disc and not as a downloadable content.  Sorry for the confusion folks!

Well, looks like I'm making some room since I still have a 20gb harddrive.

I think you have to install a downloadable texture pack, not the game itself. (Although, installing the game would probably help.)

You should clarify that this is different than doing the usual full-disc install. You should be prompted to install the separate 1.5GB HD texture/mesh pack.

Coulda sworn I read it would take upwards of 2 GBs for the high-resolution textures pack.

For all the beauty BF3 could be offering, please, take all the GBs on my HDD that it needs it.

uhm, those first textures just look crappy as hell. like the game was stuck in constant pre-texture pop-in mode =/
why don't they just make the install mandatory?
