Syndicate: looking the same as Deus Ex since 2011.

Syndicate!  Many PC aficionados look back at the 1993 classic as both one of the best games of that year as well as one of the best isometric experiences to be had.  I however wouldn't know because it came out when I was, well, 8.  For those of us who were not able to mentally operate an isometric game with micromanaging and strong violence EA and Starbreeze have seen fit to bring back the classic series... in the same manner 2K Marin in rebooting XCOM.  Yup folks, it's a first-person shooter.

Set for release early next year, Syndicate takes place in 2069 where you take on the roll of Miles Kilo, an Agent for the syndicate Eurocorp.  Sixty years from now the governments of the world only control the most powerful nations and the third world is run by syndicates, corporations that compete constantly in order to become the dominate corporate force on the planet.  Humanity has reached a point where access to the internet is no longer through an external device as they can get a neural implant that, depending on the syndicate, gives them a whole new lifestyle.  Banking, insurance, housing, job security: whatever a person needs their implant can provide.

As an Agent though Miles can do more than just order a no-foam latte and pay the bills while driving a car: the implant gives him abilities beyond the capabilities of normal humans.  With his implant Miles can see through walls and speed up his movements in order to slow down time amongst other things.

Yea, I know what you are thinking: this sounds A LOT like Deus Ex: Human Revolution, albeit with a lot more blue.  Well, to be fair, it really does.  Is that necessarily a bad thing though?  DEHR turned out to be a fantastic game and it's prime game of the year material for 2011.  Given that it is in development at Starbreeze Studios, the same developer responsible for the Riddick series as well as the first Darkness title I can't help but be excited to see such a unique company take on the cyberpunk genre.

Here's the game's first screenshots.  The Syndicate website has a countdown going on that will expire on September 29th which will probably be the first trailer for the game if it is not released to the masses today.  If that happens I'll amend this post accordingly.

    So we have:

    Neural implants
"Abilities beyond the capabilities of normal humans"
    Cyber-punk, futuristic setting
A setting in the Far East
    Corporations controlling the world
    Sepia toning
A main character who looks THE SAME AS ADAM JENSEN

    Hmm...

I like the screens, but I see this game as TPS than an FPS. I kind of think that FPS games will go to a more Deus Ex: HR/Syndicate route more than a Call of Duty route, but chances are it might not be likely and that im thinking ahead. I don't think its a bad thing though.

If someone told me those first few screenshots were from the new Deus Ex: HR DLC, I would have probably believed them.

Even though it does look a good bit like a DX:HR, I'm interested nonetheless.

Well, Syndicate came out 7 years before the first Deus Ex, so if anything Deus Ex got part of its inspiration from Syndicate. I find it hard to fault a game that may have partly inspired Deus Ex for having a main character who is caucasian and has the same hair color as Jensen. And globetrotting cyberpunk is AWESOME. It should be it's own genre. Also, Escape From Butcher Bay was one of my fav games of last gen. So yeah. Color me excited in the pantaloons.

When I saw that Asian lady's billboard reflection, I instantly thought "BLADE RUNNER".

    Amazing!

    Another FPS!!

Yep.. this really illustrates how bankrupt gaming companies have become...
What of turn based gaming?.. what of isometric perspectives??
    Where is the depth??

    Nope.. not today.
Just give me a cross hair and 'bam bam bam'....
    What a waste.

Adam Jensen still has the coolest pair of sunglasses in the history of gaming. Point for DEHR in this regard.
