To be fairly blunt, I haven't been that excited for Rage. Even after playing the game at E3 this year I simply cannot find it within myself to muster any form of hype. I know it'll be decent, it's a shooter by id (the very creators of the genera), but I'm just finding the post-apocalyptic setting to be a little tired. And with no RPG elements to give the game a little more meat, I'm wondering what I'll be doing besides just shooting and moving for 8-10 hours.

Now word has come from id Software confirming the rumors that were circulating last month. Mainly, if you buy the game for Xbox 360 you'll be treated with three disks (and no mandatory install) or, on the PlayStation 3, one disk with a mandatory 8GB install.  And if you PC people think you've gotten off the hook, think again. You'll need to be sure to have at least 25GB of free hard drive space if you want in on the action.

"What we were able to do is install all the textures to the highest level", id Software creative director Tim Willits told Eurogamer when asked about the PS3 option, "What is nice about the PS3 platform is that it's just one platform. Everyone has one Blu-ray drive, one hard drive, it's all the same. Some of the other systems you have... should I install it on my 360? Should I not install it? So yes, it's very nice."

As for the 360?

"We recommend installing the game to the hard drive, but you don't need to install all three discs," Willits explained. "If you don't have the space available on your hard drive, don't stress. Install the first disc, the first chapter, the first half of the game, then when you're done, uninstall and install disc two."

With all that space requirement there has to be something I'm not seeing; something I should be getting excited about.  I mean...one whole disk can't be just character animations and texture right?

Right?

They pulled a Twisted Pixel and the last half of the game is a live action shooting gallery in full HD video.

I was going to say that if it requires 3 discs, were going to get lots of content! I suppose if I really wanted to see the true beauty of this game, id do the install

Not too bothered. I actually get excited about multi-disc games.

as far as space and quality goes the blu ray discs of the ps3 just seem more and more convenient. and holy shit pc install o_e
textures, video (like cutscenes), audiofiles, and lastly the content of the game takes up a LOT of space on a disc, but it seems maybe kinda disoptimized, like they just set all the sliders to high with no care for simplification and tricks that many open world games use to optimize performance.
I may be wrong, maybe it's just an effing big ass game, I mean they got vehicles and stuff to traverse it.

The amount of gigs required to play this game is almost RAGE inducing! See what I did there?

25 GB? Oh my god, that's twice as much as Lost Planet 2. Geez, it's a good thing I decided to only play one game at a time...

So...does that mean the PS3 version has better texture quality than the 360? Interesting how they are treating disk space usage differently on different SKUs.

    That seems a tad excessive

Still doesn't beat the 30GB that is Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (PC). I see this 25GB, and I say, "Bring it!"

I wonder if this has to do with putting out the best quality game possible.

I mean, this isn't some no-name studio here. For the length of its development, RAGE has been priding itself on being a top-quality shooter, and nothing but. It is an interesting decision to take quality over convenience, but this sort of experiment could have come at a worse time, from a studio that has no experience in the game business.

I'm supremely curious to see just how this plays out, but my $60 that I prepared for it are being called into jeopardy. Maybe I just don't understand id Software's technique here.

“If you don’t have the space available on your hard drive, don’t stress. Install the first disc, the first chapter, the first half of the game, then when you’re done, uninstall and install disc two.”

Let me tell you a little story.

My very first computer was an Amiga 500, which only took floppy disks. I had some kind of pinball game which was very like that one that came with Windows XP, and it came on two floppy disks. To run it, you had to insert the first floppy disk, wait for it to load to the computer's RAM, insert the second floppy disk and do the same, then re-insert the first one. There were two pinball tables on the first disk and two on the second, which you had to re-insert if you wanted to play the second half of the game.

    This is that.

I've been curiously unhyped for this one too (as I have for, perhaps even more unusually, Bioshock Infinite).

Maybe it's just the amount of good stuff coming out in this Sept-Dec rush, but I'll wait to see the reviews on Rage.
