I'm not going to lie, traveling to Germany for GamesCom is a little outside of our budgetary allowances. Sadly, I did not just leave a private hands-off demonstration of Capcom and Ninja Theory's controversial reboot of 'Devil May Cry[DmC].' After reading the first few previews from those who did make the journey [links below], I wish I could have thrown responsibility to the wayside just this once. While I did not actually witness the demonstration, there is still plenty to ponder as the details come into focus. But first, let's take a look back at the controversy and fan reaction since the project was unveiled in 2010.

September 2010 - Project Announcement & Initial Controversy



No game announcement in recent memory has sparked such controversy as Devil May Cry 2010. While I found myself more enthusiastic about the franchise since the release of Devil May Cry 3, my excitement was met with a resounding 'No' from the larger fan base. Initial complaints cried out against what appeared to be a much slower combat system and the more serious tone of the story. Given the over-the-top, light hearted nature of previous entries in the franchise, it is easy to understand why many might lash out against such a different approach. Why the drastically different direction this time around? Staying in line with Capcom's most recent business strategy (mirroring that of Dead Rising 2 and Resident Evil), the news struck that this new game will be handled by a western developer this time around; the highly respected UK based studio, Ninja Theory. However, with a fresh set of eyes came a drastically different version of a beloved IP and perhaps most importantly, an established character.

Dante gets a makeover

The dividing line in the sand was made clear almost immediately upon the game's unveiling at Tokyo Game Show 2010. Gone was the buff, shirtless, demon-slayer of previous installments and in his place stood a lanky and disheveled looking youth with a penchant for smoking cigarettes. Message boards were immediately lit up with trash talk and disapproval and I can definitely understand why some people may not be fond of the redesign. While I don't wish to waste a lot of time arguing one way or another, I have been a big fan of the character redesign since day one. I find Ninja Theory's approach to be refreshing and a better alternative to another rehash of Devil May Cry 4. Some might say i'm part "emo" (I hate that fucking word) but I prefer to just admit that I have always been a fan of characters who defy the norm. The perspective and visual approach is unique to this iteration of the series but is also very reminiscent of the most popular entry, Devil May Cry 3. Not only am I interested to see exactly how Dante was in his younger days but I am also intrigued by the prospect of witnessing a boy growing into his super human abilities. It may not be what some want or even care to see but it already gives Ninja Theory a lot of room to work their magic with the fiction.

General lack of confidence in Ninja Theory

Ninja Theory is a developer that is leading the charge for gaming as a legitimate storytelling medium. They are best known for presenting mature and stimulating stories wrapped in the same fast-paced, action-based gameplay that appears in some of today's best selling action games. Heavenly Sword and Enslaved were both well received critically and as a result, no one will debate their ability to craft a well made game. The skepticism instead lies in their ability to produce a good Devil May Cry game. Many doubt that Ninja Theory is capable of producing game with such a demanding and intricate combat system. Given their history with combat, these accusations don't seem far from the truth. Heavenly Sword, while fast and fluid, lacked the depth of even a basic God of War game and Enslaved was more known for it's storytelling and platforming than it's deep combat mechanics. To make matters worse, news broke that DmC will be locked at a disappointing 30 frames-per-second and contain weapon cool down periods. As you might expect, many fans have found themselves asking what Ninja Theory was doing with their beloved franchise.

GamesCom 2011

With the first hands-off demonstration held this past week at GamesCom in Germany, I was surprised to find so many positive things being said about the controversial title. Since I wasn't there to witness the demo first hand, feel free to check out the following previews yourselves. I have summed up some of the more important bullet points below along with a few thoughts:

    1. Capcom is overseeing the project closely - Collaborations such as Konami and Kojima Productions on Castlevania were incredibly minuscule (atleast from an onlookers perspective) while Capcom seems dedicated to ensuring that DmC plays like a Devil May Cry game. A comment in 1up.com's preview of the game likened the reboot to Christopher Nolan's Batman films with unique, but worthy, versions of recognizable characters. With Ninja theory's knack for great storytelling, I can't wait to see if classic characters such as Virgil (or Nelo Angelo), Trish, or Lady make an appearance.

    2. Dante's design has undergone a few changes - In a move that I think we can all be happy with, Ninja Theory has made a few minor alterations to their original Dante design. Now a little less crackhead and a little more social deviant, the Dante that exists today seems somewhere in between the original Dante and the newer, grittier version. Also, despite the lightning fast combat footage that made up the GamesCom trailer, flashes of silver haired Dante can be glimpsed.

    3. Combat is "classic" Devil May Cry - Pardon the quote from another preview but this one sentence alleviates a lot of my concerns:
      "The gameplay doesn't look repetivive, simplicistic or flat -- in contrast to the combat in Enslaved or Heavenly Sword -- at all." - 1up.com
      The word coming out of Germany is that DmC resembles a classic Devil May Cry game in many respects and that any concerns regarding speed and fluidity should be squandered. While I will hold my judgement for the day in which I finally see the game in motion myself, it is nice to hear that Capcom's guidance seems to be paying off.

    4. Air Focused Combat - Like prior entries in the series, juggling and battling enemies while airborne is still a major part of the game. Dante will be able to juggle his foes into the air using his primary weapon which he can switch between using the d-pad. Hearing that Ninja Theory is also devoted to providing a ranged and destructive arsenal for Dante to employ is also great to hear. Of course, the success of this combat will rely on the ease in which players can switch between targets and employ other abilities and secondary weapons. From the looks of things though, Ninja Theory is on the right track.

    5. Devil Trigger and combat stances
      - Replacing the popular fighting stances of Devil May Cry 3 are devil and angel fighting stances which will have an affect on his fighting styles and abilities. The popular Devil Trigger mode also returns but in a different form. Entering this mode will heighten his fighting skills and transform him into a form that fans of the series will instantly recognize. That's right folks, Dante's Devil Trigger brings back the bright red jacket and silver hair! I don't know about you but I find this to be a really great way to incorporate classic DmC trademarks into a wholly new experience.

    6. Living World - In this new game, Dante will spend much of his time in a limbo world that shifts and contorts to impede his progress. This opens the doors for some fantastic platforming sequences and exciting scenarios for Dante to battle in. Reading about the demo in which a hallway continued to elongate as he approached the end resulted in the use of the word "parkour" in one preview.


There you have it. The long and twisting tale of a game that shows promise despite a few missteps in the eyes of Devil May Cry purists. Under the watchful eye of Capcom, Ninja Theory seems poised to deliver a product that many believe can't exist: A game as crazy and over-the-top as Devil May Cry with the presentation and storytelling euphoria of a Ninja Theory title. Slated for release sometime in 2012, 'DmC' is a game with a lot of work yet to be done but a polished, triple-A title is already beginning to take shape. I may not have made it out for GamesCom but I will jump on the opportunity to play the game myself when it finally makes it's U.S. debut in the near future. Until then, I will just have to go back and play through Devil May Cry 3 again and dream.

    Great read Nick! I have faith in Ninja Theory. And although this is slightly off topic about DmC, I agree with your comments on "emo" and characters that defy the norm. I am growing tired of the "underdog" story that seems to be so prominent in today's media and entertainment. I enjoy more the stories about characters who do things differently but with confidence. Off the beaten path, if you will. Keep it up!

    I think this is going to be a good game. It seems like Ninja theory knows what they're doing. They're fleshing out the game a bit more and making it more open to newer players, but, thankfully, aren't forgetting about the veteran players who supported the game, which is definitely the right move. I'll probably pick it up.

    I'm not the biggest Devil May Cry fan, I've enjoyed what I've played, but I'm yet to get my hands on 1 or 3. SO I'll remain quiet on the changes, but I do have one question.

    Why is the "m" lower case in Ninja Theory's DmC, is there lore tied to it, like on the bar is it in lower case?

    I like the fact that Ninja Theory is "refreshing" rather than "remaking". I only played the 1st DMC so I can't say I've followed the series. If they start revealing weapons, my money goes on a hand-to-hand weapon for the starting few.

    I'm just happy there isn't another character that looks like Dante but isn't - *cough* Nero *cough*, though I did like Vergil.

    I didn't know that Capcom was actually overseeing this new DmC project. I remember my reaction was like WTF! why are they changing Devil May Cry. But after seeing more gameplay of it, I've become hyped for the game, because i'm interested in how'll it be.

    I like the looks of this game. While Ninja Theory attempting to tackle a full on combat based game scared me at first, I think they are going in the right direction here. I actually liked the character designs in this so I hope they didn't change it too much. The main question I have now is how large is Dante's arsenal going to be? Its great to hear they have a wide range of weapons planned, but being planned and already being in the game are not the same thing.

    Nick what you forgot to mention was that the weapon cool down was on FIREARMS and not the actual swords. The cool down is on the guns. :P otherwise .. great read

    "Dante never smoked, if you can't give a character personality, make them smoke."

    But aside from the character of Dante, from what I've seen, the combat looks pretty slow and it doesn't look like they can fit many enemies on screen with the unreal engine. This is all from the last trailer, though, so hopefully they'll manage to prove me wrong.

    Great read Nick! I'm actually kinda excited about this game, I tried playing Devil May Cry 1 and didn't really enjoy it, but when the trailer for the Ninja Theory DMC came out I was instantly excited, I really liked the look; I didn't think he was 'emo'. I actually thought it was an improvement on his original look, but that's just me. The limbo sequences sound really interesting, so I want to see more of that. But anyway this was a great preview!

    I'm sure I read somewhere that the part of the game Capcom are over-seeing is the story, which is significantly less reassuring than if they were involved with the gameplay itself. I might be completely wrong about that to be fair, just seem to vaguely remember something to that effect. Either way I still want to try it; even if news like the game running at 30fps is worrying, I'd hate to write off an entry in a series I like because of a change in direction.

    Also, a very nice article I agree with others saying they liked the format.

    I know that the gameplay is similar to Bayonetta and I honestly enjoyed the hell out of that game but I never ever could get into DMC, it felt different to me for some reason. Mainly it felt like a full-blown beat-em up type game with guns which is not my type of game. I am curious to see how this reboot turns out though, but I still find it very hard to be interested in it. I mainly like seeing reboots turn out great though and basically make the series better than the originals did, so hopefully this does turn out well. This and the Tomb Raider reboot can and hopefully will give reboots of series a good name.

    So all in all, I have no interest in the series but I do hope it does well as a reboot to make it's own series or make the original series better to give us some hope on future reboots.

    Great article, all the important points are covered and not much to add to it, and I agree with most of the other comments in regards to the thoughts and feelings to what road this game is taking. So far, Ninja Theory did not disappoint, they delivered and delivered well to my opinion.

    When I've heard that Ninja Theory is working on DMC, I'm not gonna lie, that gave me a boner :p and I was excited to see what they would bring to the table. However, when I heard the concerned fans and what they pointed out about the gameplay mechanic, I started to worry (along with the news of 30 fps and the cool down). But dispute all that, I still believe that Ninja Theory will surprise everyone with this project.

    The only thing that will excite me the most is to know if they will have anything new to bring to the game that we didn't see before. That would make a difference. to me, its not about if Dante looks "emo" or smokes or is not buff or cool anymore. Hell he could be a fungus for all I care..... Well...... Ok maybe I don't want that but still I don't think it matters what he would look like. Just give us a game with a good story and a great gameplay. However, it would've been interesting if they would have changed him completely to a female. That would get the fanboys pissed :p

    So far, I'm more excited about this game than any other coming out. Even more excited than (dare I say) Batman: Arkham City.

    I'm sure using the Unreal Engine 3 (Used in such games as Gears of War, Singularity, and Kinect Adventures..wait..) will allow Ninja Theory to make the combat feel like the classic Devil May Cry combat. Especially with only 20 frames per second.

    Rebellious youths tend to smoke. I've always been in love with the change of DmC. The more mature take on Dante is really intriguing to me. I'm more of a "character" guy when it comes to games; so when they take a cool character like Dante and make him seem cooler(in my eyes), I get extremely interested.

    I've never played a DMC game, so I wouldn't know if this looks like a promising or disappointing game from a fan's standpoint. Will the game explain why he bleached his hair?

    I'm not a fan of the angel and demon triggers. Since when was Dante part angel? Also, as you pointed out Nick, the 30 FPS is a travesty for a DMC game. The last trailer they put out made me feel a bit better about this game but I am still expecting the worst. Maybe if I have bad expectations for the game I'll find more things to surprise me.

    Great article, but I hope you're not trying to convince anyone to change their minds. Some people will still hate the game when it comes out solely based on the very first trailer. I personally am quite optimistic about this game, and can't wait to see the finished product. I really hope that Virgil makes an appearance at some point!

    Nice breakdown, that is exactly how my thoughts have been through this trailer, in a similar fashion with the new Tomb Raider reboot as well, I'm seeing young characters. Characters that I hope I can see grow up with their games, I want to see Dante and Lara Croft age, I love how Snake ages. Some games really needed to change their ages and appearance to make it really feel like time has gone by. It just makes things more intriguing when you start a sequel that takes place years after the first one and you try to find what happened between.

    I still have a problem with the devil trigger, it's pretty lame, imo. Taking what should have been the original character design in the first place and turning that into a special form is unoriginal. I would have much preferred some actual demonic designs as the devil trigger form. Imagine if goku turned super saiyan which turned him into... a normal goku with large, black hair instead of blonde hair and it actually had the same shape of hair as his original design. Oh yeah, it's called super saiyan 4 and was regarded as the least appealing form in the history of db because it was still pretty generic compared to the other super saiyan forms. The same can be said with this "new" dmc devil trigger.

    Although I share is some air of uncertainty with this new dmc, I'm glad Capcom is rebooting the franchise because I sincerely felt that dmc was beginning to become stale ever since dmc4. For me personally, the reason why I fell in love with devil may cry back in the day was because it was a sudden change of pace from the typical hack n' slash game. Shinji Mikami took every convention of gameplay mechanics and shattered them. It was refreshing. He introduced the devil trigger (which kind of created an award for killing a set number of enemies), unlimited ammo, upgradeable weapons/moves and quick, to-the-point gameplay that put less emphasis on story and dialogue. After dmc3, the series slowly became the hack n' slash games it tried to deviate itself from. Other hack n' slash games were already incorporating what made dmc so great and slowly the franchise was losing it's edge in originality. When they set the new standard with dmc1, they never attempted to raise it; they only set out to refine it. I commend Capcom for being able to catch that and deal with it now rather than wait and risk making a dmc5 that felt generic without any drastic changes.

    Ninja Theory is one of the few underrated developers out there who are a bit rough around the edges but consistent enough to have a great deal of potential behind their talented team. Although I'm still a bit miffed about the character design and the devil trigger, there are still some qualities to this new dmc that are noteworthy. Bringing in an outside development team is already doing some wonders for the franchise. From the trailer, the level design feels like a fresh take on Inception's curling cityscape scene. Visually, the combat has improved and it retains the essential feel of the originals with a mix of Ninja Theory's own style. Maybe Ninja Theory can revive the unique, fresh feeling the franchise once had. I'm not too concerned about them staying entirely faithful to the originals as long as some of the basic qualities are there. Ultimately, I want to feel like I'm playing dmc, but I want it to feel new.

    I've only slightly played Devil May Cry 1, and I remember nothing of it's story. Going off of this, I enjoyed the game for it's gameplay, so if it can impress me with it's gameplay then all for the better.

    However, I won't know if I need to shit on this game until I get it in my hands and actually play it. Reserving judgement until that moment.

    I'm kinda mixed with my feeling for this particular title. I'm interested to see how Ninja Theory takes the series, but I'm also worried about the gameplay. I have a feeling that Ninja Theory can deliver on satisfying combat, but in a different way than older DMC games have.

    The amount of control over your character (Dante or Nero) was always pretty smooth and fluid where you had many different options as to what you wanted to do.

    I'm not too sure Ninja Theory can deliver on that same feeling as the old games had. I'm sure there have been many attempts to imitate DMC's style of combat, but not many can get that right. However, I am quite confident that Ninja Theory can deliver on combat that is more "visually" satisfying. Enslaved's combat wasn't very deep, but I still liked. I'm not sure how to explain it, but whenever Monkey hit some robot, it had the extra "oomph" to it that made it better than your typical God of War type game.

    Very interesting.
    I've never played the DMC games (Why?! No idea =[) but hopefully I will at some point. This article is helping me understand the controversy and backlash with the new game .
    Hideki Kamiya was asked on twitter if he was going to play the new game and he outright said that he won't be...I don't know what to make of that.

    I've got no idea why, but I never played the old DMC games. Personally though, I prefer the old Dante better but I think some DMC experience is needed for a better opinion

    It's never a bad thing to give something older a new coat of paint. And even if this game isn't all too great, there are still those other great games in the series to be enjoyed. But if it IS good (here's hoping) then great, another awesome edition to a very unique and well crafted franchise. At this point, all the cards are layed out in front for all eyes to see. Only thing to do now is wait.

    I'm not sure what to make of this game, personally. I never was really into the DmC series. Maybe it is the style or maybe it is the mechanics. I dunno. I can't say that I am hyped about this one, but if one of my friends has a copy (when it is out), I'll give it a go. It is suppose to be a reboot from the old, right?

    As for whether or not Ninja Theory is onto something here, only time will tell. I'm still annoyed by Dante's look, the white hair and the red coat are trademarks that made Dante stand out. Even with the minor revisions to the look, Dante still looks like an emo Twilight reject. If this game is gonna win me over the gameplay better be like old school DMC or I'm not even gonna pick this up.

    A nice post Nick, and it's nice to see the community coming out in much greater force as of late to reply.

    Regarding controversy, the Infamous 2 Cole redesign springs to mind as dividing the fan base of a game - an uproar that as we know lead to a redesign.

    And then we come to DmC...I still don't think that Ninja Theory are the people for the job, however i am willing to try the game out if / when there is a demo for the masses. There's no denying that Ninja Theory are good at crafting stories and their cutscenes - the thing that will make or break this game however is the combat and its level of intracasy.

    I've never really been interested in DmC, but this sounds pretty cool, I'm contemplating whether I'm excited for this or not.

    They discarded the things that define the world and characters of Devil May Cry, which I believe to be over the top, hard to take seriously and overall fun, but they still called it by the same name. Quite honestly, I would've preferred it if they did the same game but didn't associate it with DMC at all. They're pushing a potentially good idea and riding on the coat tails of a popular title.

    It's like taking this same game, but modelling the world after a Mario game. It may be fun and interesting in some ways, but it simply does not fit.

    As long as the combat/gameplay is fairly the same as the old games, then all is well. I was just worried that everything would change. I can deal with the artistic changes and the way that ninja theory will put their own twist to the story.

    I haven't seen enough of the gameplay to really form an opinion on that, but I am confident that Ninja Theory is putting a lot more effort into the gameplay than they have in their previous games because the Devil May Cry franchise has always been known for its great gameplay. Also, on the topic of the new character, I think that people who complain about the new character design are pretty stupid. I mean seriously, how desperate do you have to be to find flaws in a game to complain about the main character having a different hair color.

    The first trailer for this game didn't actually draw me into this game much. I wouldn't say I was on the side of completely downing the game because of this or that... I just didn't like the way they did the trailer. Skip ahead a few and the E3 Combat trailer was released. This is what made me believe in this game a lot more. Slipping a bit of the story side into it and showing some stylish combat was an appealing treat for my eyes.
    I knew from the beginning that this is a "reboot" so of course Dante is going to look different and certain aspects of the story are going to change (maybe even some of the things I loved about the third and first). It's in the possibilities that I get truly excited for this title:
    -What if this story shines some light on how he grew into his abilities?
    -Did Dante even know he was part demon?
    -How will he find rebellion and some weapons?
    -Will he eventually start to look and act like the original one most of us know and love?
    -And (something I'm excited just thinking about) will he encounters some iconic enemies and partners?
    After DMC4 I felt like this was definitely necessary and that there's definitely room to grow, quite literally, on this project. But only one way to find out! Can't wait till this releases~

    Not having played more than just a few minutes of a Devil May Cry game in my life I can't really say that I have the best angle to look at the series as a whole critically. But if I looked at just the core game play and design of the past DmC games versus this one I would choose this one almost instantly. Putting the looks aside, as I do feel really drawn to the look of this game and not so much to the other games in the series, I feel like I would have a much more enjoyable and overall fun time with this game. And isn't that what a video game is supposed to be? A fun experience that detaches you from reality for a few hours?

    I have a few friends that swear by the past DmC games, 4 is iffy for some of them, and they are telling me that this game looks like shit and isn't worth the time or effort and that Ninja Theory destroyed their beloved franchise, I don't see that at all. I see this game as one that I could sit down and dump 6-10 hours and come out feeling like I had a good time.

    Due to budget restraints on me I probably won't be able to buy this day one, or even in the same quarter it comes out, but it is a game that is going on my ever stretching list of games I plan on at least renting if not buying.

    For someone who hasn't played the original, but knows the game, new Dante character looks way cooler. The amount of crying on YouTube from fanboys is amusing.

    I've been a longtime fan of DMC since the original and i usually love to see fan communities being active but I'm definitely against the mass of fans on this one. i think the only thing they have shown of the game to not like is the redesign itself not the fact that there was a redesign. not liking the game for a story direction we know nothing about or a couple of minutes of actual gameplay really isn't valid at all. but if not liking the new look of Dante is what keeps you from playing the game then honestly it seems like you've been a fan of DMC for the wrong reasons

    I think some of the changes are good, I also think that they put in a lot of melee and quite a few ranged attacks(not including the thrown car), I wish they'd show more gun than sword because that's mostly the thing players recognize in Devil may cry, and the environment is very different from the other ones which I am very looking forward to see what difference does it really make.

    The backlash toward the character redesign reminds me of the initial backlash toward Windwaker's stylistic departure. And as with Windwaker I think its too early to rush to judgement about the game just yet.

    I only played the latest one but i'm really excited for this new one even though I can see the flaws some people have pointed out.

    Personally, I don't like his redesign, as people have run into the ground he does look "emo", Dante was always about the parties, pizza and ice-cream and going toward a more grim and gritty design just seems a bit strange as to me it feels like Dante is behaving completely out of character, then again a reboot can do what it wants.
    Also it worries me that the game is on the Unreal Engine due to the rather low frame rate that this game will likely have, as did most Ninja Theory games have, whereas DMC has always had a standard of 60fps.
    Really I don't see why Capcom didn't go to someone like Platinum Games to make a new DMC, what with Bayonetta being a fantastic game, but oh well never know this could be amazing, I'm just cautious of it for now.

    I"ll admit that I was one of the people hating on this game when I first heard about it, but with these new details and a little time to think it over instead of jumping to a conclusion I have to say that I'm in deep anticipation for this game and really wanna hear about story.

    Having read that Dante is now apparently half angel and half demon ((which i REALLY don't like)) I can come to one conclusion karma choices T_T.

    I read he has two weapons, one demonic and one angelic, i'm guessing that will be like good and bad karma in any other game and you'll have to choose which one to upgrade (Much like Coles powers in Infamous).

    Like i said before i'm willing to play the demo - but i'm still aprehensive about the future facing this franchise now :/
