Titans look to be a formidable foe.

I'm right in the middle of my review of Deus Ex: Human Revolution but I had to stop and give you guys this great video.  While I never actually played XCOM back in the day I can say that I've always been interested in the franchise and after 2K Marin announced they were bringing back the series I was cautiously optimistic.  Their previous game, Bioshock 2, was pretty good despite not being as critically acclaimed as the first one.  Rebooting the franchise and setting it in the early 1960s against a non-organic, secret invasion however was more than enough to tick off much of the XCOM community.  I, for one, look forward to the game and I hope you agree after seeing the following video.  Brothers in Arms squad tactics meets a Deus Ex style open narrative with a dash of strategy mixed in?  Sign me up.

The following demo is the same one shown to the press behind closed doors at E3 this year.  2011 already has a great line-up but 2012 is starting to look even better.

Personally I think this looks terrible for an XCOM game. Simply put, the best part of old XCOM games were the utter fear of losing your precious squad mates on a bad turn. The change from tactical combat to dull FPS, Mass Effectish combat is really gonna turn off a lot of fans of the old games. Why didn't they just present this game as a new IP? It doesn't look like a particularly bad game but XCOM it is not

It definitely has a lot of cool things about it, but that combat seems sort of lack luster. Maybe it's just me, though.

I'm going to echoe the sentiments of balancebgm.

Strictly watching this video as a Game, it looks impressive. The gameplay looks fun, the visuals are VERY nice and the tactical choices and abilities look like they are going to make for some interesting and different runs through these levels.

However, as an X-COM game? This looks terrible. I'm not one of these purists who demands an isometric strategy game for my X-COM or nothing at all but I do feel, even as an FPS, the things htat make X-COM what it is are missing from this.

You need larger, open levels. Alien invasions to happen a lot more randomly and to feel like an active threat to YOU and your base, not just you in the levels. Losing your agents is meant to mean something and finally picking up and researching powerful weapons like the Dimensional missile launcher were amazing moments.

I'll be honest and I definitely consider this game to be a purchase. I'm just saddened that this is what we get from the 'X-com' IP these days. It certainly isn't bad but it could have been much, much more.

They look like they've got some very good concepts down while taking elements from the original Xcom, but what I don't like is how the game just hands you the enemies like it's a generic first person shooter while in the first Xcom game you had to actually look for them.
Not so sure about this game...

Well I'll be damned, Chris, you got me interested. I like how you return to the base between missions to "discuss" strategies and to modify your team (at least, that's what they SAID). Very interesting mixture between first person action and an RPG. As a newcomer to this apparent series, I can say it looks pretty badass.

I have just recently played my first XCom game on Steam and I love it. Coming from me it wouldn't mean much to say this new game is a bastardization of the series, as I have only recently discovered it. That said, I am not looking forward to this new game and can see why fans of the previous games would be upset with this. Really it's XCom in name only and doesn't stay faithful to the series in many ways at all. Disregarding that, the game itself looks average. Doesn't look terrible but doesn't look good either. I myself am going to pass on this one, as there are other games that I believe are more worth my money.

Being a hardcore X-Com fan, I have to say I have mixed feelings about this. The game looks nicely polished gameplay wise and looks beaitful visually, but..it just ain't X-Com. Adding simple squad tactics and a few aliens on the side don't make it "kinda' like the original" but something else entirely. I'm ok with what Bethesda did with the Fallout series, because they retained almost everything the first 2 games did and expanded and polished them up so they can feel both fresh and familiar at the same time. This game would be like if Bethesda turned Fallout 3 into a simple side-scrolling shooter...that happened to take place in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

But thus, I will still buy this game because it looks interesting in concept.

I hope this has some of the tongue and cheek humor about the 50's that Destroy all humans had.

While the game does look very nice graphically, it looks incredibly dull from a gameplay perspective. Just hiding behind blocks, shooting a few times and then retreating back, occasionally issuing an order or activating a power to break the tedious nature of the game.

They turn one of the best games ever made from an intelligent, turn based, isometric game.. with in depth management and squad control.. into a run of the mill corridor, scripted shooter.
Wow.. even with chest high walls.

Read that again and understand why everyone familair with X-COM is so upset by this new game... It retains NOTHING of the oringial.. No canon. No aliens.. No tech.. it has NOTHING in common.. why???
