Thanks to the recent Steam deals, of which I'm sure many of you also splurged on as well, I've had the chance to finally buy Terraria on sale. After hearing so much about it, and hearing about its similarities with Minecraft, I thought 'why not.'

At first glance from first spawning in my new world, I thought immediately that the look of the game had a 'Minecraft feel' , though having only the 2D perspective made it VERY different. In Minecraft you must make ALL tools from scratch, when you first start in Terraria you are given a copper axe, copper pickaxe and an NPC Guide who can give you help with crafting any material you show him or hints on how to progress in the game, like creating houses for other NPCs to live in. Tools in Terraria also don't have a usage limit, so they do not break, which is a nice alternative to constantly returning to a workbench just to make a few more picks. Having items like axes, picks, and weapons that do not wear down leaves you much more room for other items in your inventory. This is a good thing indeed, given that Terraria has randomized materials and chests with loot all over your uniquely generated world.

Now, a few days later having gotten my bearings in the game, I can still say that I can get completely overwhelmed at times. I've built a small town now which is home to my Nurse, Demolitionist, Guide, Merchant and Dryad. My Arms Dealer was decapitated last night during an attack from the Goblin Army and has yet to respawn. While adventuring for Heart pieces to upgrade my Health, I was alerted that a Meteorite had landed. I panicked. I knew that if I found the meteorite, I could mine the pieces and combine them with other material I had mined in the past few days and create LIGHTSABERS. Amazing and ridiculous things like this are what keeps me so into this game.

There's still much I've yet to experience in Terraria. It's a game that I cannot 'just play' for a little while. With all its randomized loot, upgradable items, unexplored lands, unpredictable battles, and even BOSS fights, this is a game I can only describe as a full blown Open World Adventure/Survival Metriodvania.

    I picked up Terraria during the same sale and have only put in a couple hours myself; I can completely relate to the feeling of being completely overwhelmed. The game has some very simple mechanics, but the combinations of materials and requirements to progress are not very intuitive. It certainly feels a lot more like a Castlevania to me than just a Minecraft. I'm certainly looking forward to putting in more time and progressing further... just need to get me onto a multiplayer server. :)

    Did you just become a writer for 4Player SciFi? If so, congrats! It is good to see some prominent community members writing for the site. :)

    (Btw, do you mean Dryad instead of Dyad?)

    Whoa. I've played Terraria and I've gotten kind of bored with it, but it seems like I've barely scratched the surface (mining pun slightly intended).

    Dude, LIGHTSABERS? I can be down with any game that lets you build lightsabers. I'm gonna have to give this another shot, though I think I might need a guide. @.@;

    Good read, Sci!

    I picked this up the first day of release with a buddy and we explored to our hearts content, within 50 hours of almost non stop playing, we already had all pieces of end game armor and a small town with a towering hotel. Still now they are releasing even more content and I still can't get enough of it, they have so much planned for this game it really is overwhelming. Congrats on your post Sci,

    First, it's about time you got an article, Scifi!

    Second, I kind of want this game. Terarria seems like my kind of meticulous game. Very nice article.

    Terraria is one of those addictive things like Minecraft, only it has its own unique stuff.

    Nice article, Scifi!!

    It is a game that seems to suck up massive amounts of time thanks to the structure of the game world. New items are being added in with patches to keep inching the loot bar along for those who enjoy hunting down various items. My interest in the game died off slowly as I grabbed a few top sets of armor and weapons. I suppose playing multiplayer would add on replayability, but that requires friends, an asset I am quite sparse on at the moment.

    *slow claps* yes scifi.....exactly. Very nice....I was really upset with how brad handled the game last "your way Wednesday", but it wasn't surprising seeing how little he played of minecraft. I'm just glad you and nolan saw the addictiveness and fun to be had in this game. Lightsabers aren't even the best weapons in the game....lol I've been playing for hours on mines and still want to find more sweet loot....Ohh man i want the Vine soo badly!

    I absolutely played the SHIT out of Terraria the first few days it came out. My eyes were sore from playing so much.

    The main problem is that once you've gotten all the items there's not that much left to do. Building in a 2D game is nothing compared to building in 3D like in Minecraft.
