I've got some bad news for those people looking forward to the third installment of the Mega Man Legends series. Capcom has released a message on the Mega Man Legends 3 devroom page stating that the project has been cancelled. Rumors earlier this month feared and predicted the eventual cancellation after the removal of the project from Capcom of Japan's homepage. These rumors were preceded by concerns that the project was never greenlit in the first place. The planned downloadable "Prototype" demo that would have acted as the game's prologue has also been cancelled.

The official statement reads:

We'd like to thank you for your ongoing loyal support of Mega Man Legends 3. Today, however, we must regrettably announce the discontinuation of this project.

From the outset the MML3 Project was intended to give gamers across the world insight and input into the development process. Part of this process includes an assessment of whether the title will go into full production, and is based on a number of criteria with input from different sectors of the company.

Unfortunately it was not felt that the Mega Man Legends 3 Project met the required criteria, and it is with regret that we must announce that the Mega Man Legends 3 Project has been cancelled, meaning that Capcom will not be releasing the Prototype or the full game. Additionally, updates of the Mega Man Legends Developer Room will cease as of today, though the North American Developer Room and its forums will remain open indefinitely.

We can only express our deepest apologies to all of you who have lent us your unending support, including participation in the Mega Man Legends 3 Developer Room. On behalf of the entire Legends team, please accept our sincere apology for failing to meet the expectations of the fans.

We thank you all so much for your extended support of this title and this community, and we hope that you will continue to support the Mega Man franchise as well as other Capcom games.

This statement and a FAQ addressing certain questions about the cancellation can be accessed here: Capcom Devroom

Very, very disappointing. I loved the Legends spin=offs, maybe even more then the title games and seeing this news is a double bitch slap in the face.

That's a shame. It would've been great to play another Legends.

I kind of assumed this would happen sooner or later once MegaMan Universe (I believe that was the name) got canned earlier this year. Having never had the opportunity to get into the Legends series I'm not too bothered but I know how revered they are by a lot of people. I'm a huge fan of the classic MegaMan games though so seeing the series declining sucks an awful lot. I kinda wish they would take the MegaMan 9 and 10 formula off consoles and start doing more handheld titles in that style rather than nothing but Battle Network games though.

This pretty much was the only reason I even wanted to get a 3DS, so there goes that. The first Mega Man Legends is one of my all-time favorite games, so this news is quite saddening.

Not surprising really. Anyone with any sense or talent has already left Capcom, it seems.

I can't help but blame the 3DS for this one. The fanbase was split pretty hard thanks to that exclusivity deal. The language they use in the statement is far from direct, however if this does boil down to "lack of interest", its because they put it on a format that few, if any of the loyal fans have interest in. It was a bad idea from the start, I just hate to see this franchise suffer more because Nintendo wants to push devs to sell more of their units.

As huge Megaman Fan I will say I was Pissed beyond Belief when I heard this. I love the Classic Series, the X Series, the Zero Series, and The Legend Series. But I never got into Battle Network or Star Force. I guess I just like my Megaman being an action/Platforming game and not a turn Based RPG. But this makes me wonder one thing. Is Megaman as a Franchise even alive anymore? 10 might have concluded the Classic Series but I can see an 11th game. But the Zero and X series have a big plot connection. If they do make another X game I would really like them to end in the begging of the Zero Series, and make a game based off the gap in between the Zero and ZX games, and fill in the Gap from the ZX series going into the Legends Series. Or at least make a new Megaman series that's not an RPG.

I was looking forward to this game since I liked playing the first one even though I only played a little of it. Sad to see this go.
