Sony Online Entertainment has announced that its first, and somewhat contentious, Star Wars MMO will be shut down. As of  December 15, 2011, Star Wars Galaxies will be no more.

First released in 2003, SWG took a different approach to the Star Wars universe by allowing the player to just be a regular person living within the mythos the series has created. Sure, it was possible to become a Jedi, but most people were content being a part of the player run economy and just selling energy sources, like wind, to other people who chose to make blasters for a living.

All that was changed when the MMO went through various updates to completely revamp the combat and the core player experience,  causing turmoil within the servers and a mass exodus of many of the original players.

But all that is a moot point now.

The shutdown of SWG is a very difficult decision, but SOE and LucasArts have mutually agreed that the end of 2011 is the appropriate time to end the game.

We are extremely grateful to all of the SWG fans. We have had the rare opportunity to host one of the most dedicated and passionate online gaming communities and we truly appreciate the support we've received from each and every one of you over the course of the past eight years.

Part of it is more than likely also related to SWTOR. LucasArts probably prefers having resources spent on a fresh, new MMO that the old SWG crowd can migrate to while drawing in new players.

I suspect there's more than subscription numbers that's causing the closures. Typically you see these games go free to play (unless their subscription numbers are really that bad). It may be that since the same companies that developed/published SWG (EA and LucasArts) are now publishing SWTOR, they don't want to spend the capital to make the old one profitable and are trying to get the old subscribers to pick up the new Star Wars MMO (which conveniently is launching about when the old one is shutting down). I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't do some early access thing or some other promotion to get the loyal SWG fans into SWTOR.

It's a shame really, Star Wars Galaxies was one of the best MMO's of all time when it launched, but after the NGE the entire game went to hell. It's such a shame to see such a good game fall so far all because the developers refused to listen to and act in the interests of its community.

Played SWG on day one. I quit not after the combat upgrade, but the new game enhancements. It was a crap move for SWG and SOE. All that was different and fun about SWG was killed off when the new game enhancements replaced the skill trees for classes and levels, tact for 'action', and destroyed the player economy. This is fine for MMOs built for it, but SWG did not operate like that. Right down to the engine the 'new' system couldn't work. Effectively alienating the subscribers, the customers, from the game. This removed the game from SWG, making it little more than a MMO RPers pricy playground. Most servers merged down and the players just sat in the bars and watch entertainer class dance. Making there own stories up. This leads me to believe that the subscriber base is to low for the last server to stay up, or there was a deal to get SWG shut down. As there is nothing Star Wars about SWG apart from the setting. Like going into a chat room titled 'swimming pool.' It's a surprise that Star Wars Galaxies is shutting down, but more of a surprise that it didn't happen earlier.

Hopefully this means that SWTOR is now coming sooner rather than later.
