Silent Hill Downpour

Let the E3 coverage begin! Be sure to check back over the coming week to get all of E3 coverage by reading our articles, downloading our daily E3 podcasts, and following our Twitter accounts like a hawk! We will be bringing all of our thoughts and opinions straight from the show floor every evening after the show floor closes it's doors. With that said, lets get this show on the road.

Unlike previous years, Konami has chosen to hold their E3 media briefing via satellite pre-E3 rather than hosting an on-site event brought to you by the cast and crew of the hit show, "Glee". While the announcements and reveals coming out of the event were few, there were a few things worth noting. Being the Silent Hill fan that I am, the obvious news coming out of the conference that caught my attention was the official E3 2011 trailer for the upcoming console iteration, "Silent Hill Downpour." While the trailer opts for the intense, fast-cut vibe of a summer action movie, it does solidify the differences in the tone that were hinted at in the first trailer.

I am personally very pleased with the set-up for the story. The jail break set up really reminds me of the Fugitive and the theme of violence and redemption in the mind of a convict seem like the perfect fit for the world of Silent Hill. If the game will be making an appearance on the show floor, I fully intend on getting some hands-on time with the game so I can gauge the changes made to the controls and overall feel of the game.

On a side note, I was rather surprised by the wording of:

"In association with Vatra Games"

Prior to this trailer, the team had been credited with full-on developing the title. Who knows what that means but it does worry me a little that Konami may have tightened their grip on the studio for the sake of quality control.

In other news...

    • Silent Hill also was announced to be receiving it's very own HD collection featuring the both Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3. A release date was not announced but 2012 would be a reasonable assumption. With Silent Hill 2 ranking highly among my top 20 games of all time, it is safe to assume that I am totally stoked for this one.
    • Lastly, Konami announced the yet-to-be-shown Silent Hill: Book of Memories, an original title being developed for Sony's NGP. Unfortunately, this will probably be the reason I buy an NGP. Damn you Konami.

With Metal Gear Solid Rising, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, and Zone of the Enders 3 missing from the event (big surprised...), many are sure to be disappointed. However, it is safe to say that I got what I came for...

Is it just me or is the protagonist of Downpour voiced by David Hayter (Solid Snake)?

meh silent hill. Metal Gear HD collection including Peacewalker!!!! and ZOE HD will be the reason I turn on my consoles maybe all year. Games have been getting so cliche and boring lately. I hope you guys cover Starhawk which looks amazing too.

Sweet dude will be looking forward to it, i have a feeling this game will produce some interesting results, let's just hope it doesn't have as much locked doors. And Silent Hill: Book of Memories, hmmm? If you've beaten the first 3 Silent Hill, look up "Silent Hill: Book of Lost Memories" for some important detail on the story.

I don't know, I have a hard time getting behind current gen Silent Hill games. The hardware allows everything to look so crisp, combined with the camera controls that allows you to examine every gruesome detail in glorious 1080p, which somehow detracts from the horror. I think the people hashing the trailer together realize that since they cut away from all the horrific moments, or otherwise made use of post production techniques to obscure the monsters. It would be interesting if they used some of those techniques when enemies were nearby...

That being said, the outdoor atmosphere looks very intriguing. Fingers crossed we spend more time outdoors than in the otherworld.

Some of the setting really reminds me of Alan Wake.

I see what people mean by calling it Silent Wake, but 1- there is way too much action going on in this game to call it Alan Wake, which had the momentum of a snail.
Also, I'm so glad they didn't just throw in the nurse monster into this game like they did all the others

I wouldn't worry about the "in association with" bit. I'm thinking they just wanted the trailer to look cinematic. Go look at a movie trailer or the intro credits of a movie, they always start with "presented by ... in association with ...". I'm just hoping the game doesn't want to be too flashy and cinematic. I mean how many cinematic games sell well? They're either too flashy, too short, poor gameplay or whatever. If it's going in that direction non-fans will probably avoid it. But who am I kidding I'm buying this game no matter what. I'm a collector. :)
