Assassin's Creed RevelationsIn a rather surprising turn of events, Ubisoft officially unveiled the next entry in the Assassin's Creed series today; a whole month prior to E3 2011. With extensive details about the title forthcoming in the next issue of Game Informer and an appearance at the upcoming E3 Expo in Los Angeles, Ubisoft had the following to say about the announcement:

“Delivering the final chapter of the Ezio trilogy is an important milestone in the Assassin’s Creed franchise for us and for our fans,” said Alexandre Amancio, Creative Director at Ubisoft Montreal. “Assassin’s Creed Revelations includes lots of new features and some significant surprises. We can’t wait to show our fans what we have in store at E3 this year.”

Not much is known about the title yet but a few significant tid bits have found their way on the internet including:

  • This entry will act as the concluding chapter in Ezio Auditore's epic storyline that began in AC2 and continued into AC:Brotherhood.

  • Ezio will travel to Constantinople during the rise of the Ottoman Empire in the 1400's to take down a group of Templars who threaten to destabilize the region.

  • Players will control Ezio, Desmond, and Altair over the course of the game as their stories converge. This will mark the first return of Altair to the series since the 'Assassin's Creed Bloodlines' on the PSP.

  • Ezio will be older in this game, possibly in his 40's or 50's.

  • Revelations will expand and improve upon the Multiplayer modes that surprised audiences last year. This multiplayer mode was particularly exciting and was among my favorite things that I played at E3 2010.

My 2 cents...

With the reveal behind us now, the response to the announcement has been rather divisive. With many people quickly expressing their disapproval of yet another title starring Ezio, many, myself included, have embraced the idea of concluding this story arch before moving on. While I am admittedly a little bummed that we are getting yet another side chapter rather than a full blown sequel, my opinion on the matter is that Ubisoft has found a rather powerful way to keep this franchise alive while keeping the audience engaged.

The delay of the next defining chapter in the 'Assassin's Creed' series (AC3) is a testament to the strength and complexity of the story and characters that were developed in 2. Thanks to some impressive writing, I would lump Ezio Auditore into a category populated by today's most prominent and compelling protagonists. With the positive reception of AC2, can you blame Ubisoft for wanting to develop the character further? Without Ezio acting as the franchise backbone the past few years, AC would have already devolved into yet another annualized 'Call of Duty' clone. While that series shares a similar development cycle as AC, the commitment to characters and over-arching plot is something that I think keeps AC from falling prey to the complaints that are constantly launched against 'Call of Duty' year after year.

Keep in mind that these "side chapters" (read: sequel) are allowing fans of the series and the fiction to continue building an understanding of the universe and back-story while time is spent perfecting the next "big step" that series will ultimately take. If you don't recognize that these titles are constantly honing and perfecting the game-play and storytelling, stop lying to yourself. With each entry in the series, Ubisoft Montreal has proven that even a game on an annualized development cycle can feel and play different from year to year. I am personally very excited to see where changes were made and what aspect of the gameplay has been improved since Brotherhood. Combine that excitement with my desire for answers to the continuously evolving plot and it would be hard for Ubisoft to go wrong.

As a concluding chapter in a major story arch, the real test will be wrapping up loose ends cleanly and opening doors for the series to walk through in the future. Can Ubisoft pull off a "Kojima" and rationally explain some of the crazy plot twists like in 'Metal Gear Solid 4'? Who knows but I can't wait to find out. Rest assured that 'Assassin's Creed Revelations' will be one of my primary focuses when wandering the floor of E3 this year.

That's what I think but what do you think?  I know many members of this community are itching to chime in on their opinions so let us know what you think in the comments!

I had a thought in the back of my mind that the next AC would star Ezio, even though I never touched the other games and watch my brother play through AC2. Is it just me or are the GameInformer covers looking alot more fancy these days?

good article, while i'm looking forward to the next chapter of AC i'm excited to see the closing of Ezio's story and how this game plays out.

I share your excitement Nick! People keep saying AC isn't evolving, and that they're just stretching things out. But I disagree. It has one of the best modern storylines, and with each entry they keep improving things more and more. I'm not ready for it to be over just yet. Let's do this!

I, too, am a bit disappointed in this not being AC3, but then again I wasn't expecting the next game to be. At least we get a confirmation in this being the "closing chapter" for Etzio. One thing is for certain, each AC game has been better then the last, so this is something to look forward to.

I was actually thinking about AC and how the first game was really kind of a sub-par game. It had some really cool mechanics and ideas but overall just didn't play out great. AC2 though was a truly great game. Ezio was a really good, funny character unlike Altair who really wasn't a character. Brotherhood only served to improve upon an already great game which was impressive. I don't really think it's fair to call Brotherhood a side chapter one, because it was the length of a normal game and two, if anyone passed it off because they thought it was an unimportant side game, they will be lost without hope by the plot in AC3. I'm very excited for Revelations and though I'm sad to see Ezio go, he's getting really old for this time period haha. He had to go sooner or later.

I beat the first game and have yet to dive into others, besides November is really crowded so I may have to hold off on this one.

Hurray, maybe we'll get a new protagonist for AC3 now. Though I'll miss Ezio. He's lovely.

Or maybe Desmond will finally stop sitting on a chair all day and do something. I'm excited to see what's going on, I was left incredibly confused by the ending of AC:B, and I hope we get some closure.

Considering this is a series that can literally go to any time period in any country they want to, it's a bit pathetic that they are reusing the same character for the third time in a row.

There's Egypt, China, Japan. Christ, you could even do a World War 1 or 2 if you felt like being creative enough.

Really considering not buying the game just to spite them (Yeah, I know. Big whoop)

I'm 50/50 on this decision. I've still yet to play Brotherhood all the way through (I intend to do so as soon as I've finished my huge pile of Uni work) and while I would love to see a new Assassin, I suppose they've done so much with Ezio that they need to finish the story arc.

Saying that however, they never concluded Altair's story, only mentioning that he had a kid in AC2, and it works to not conclude the story. These are assassin's, they come and go, they emerge from the shadows, strike, then disappear. Why can their life not follow their work? To conclude their stories takes away some of the mysticism in my view.

I agree with others here, I'm really on the fence about this. I adored AC2 and Brotherhood, so more Ezio is great on one hand.

On the other, I'm impatient to see them try something new with the franchise. It's tough not to shake the feeling that they're a little worried and nervous about taking that step, and are playing it safe.

Appreciate the Call of Duty points but I think there's a balance to be struck here.

Hey, I'll be getting that preorder in for ACR, no doubt...

this is a good choice for ubisoft, yes we alllll want a new character eventually cause we already know alot about ezio, but they seem to be promising more mystery to his story than their already is. and with how ezio has grabbed so much attention already, making 1 more game with him was a smart move. I also am very excited for it and cant wait to see how altair sneaks his way into the story

I understand they need to make another AC with Ezio. The investment is good, but that still doesn't change the fact that I don't want to see Ezio again. I like AC 1 and 2, but I thought the story was going to many eras. That is one of AC's strongest points and it's being wasted. Seeing Brotherhood was more than enough for Ezio. At least Revelations will make use of Altair and tie Ezio's story to a end. I want to see AC3.

My point is mute, because games have to be made to make money. Chances are Ubisoft can revisit the story in other time frames, or reuse the engine. AC's engine would make a great shinobi/ninja game. Hard to say, likely Ubisoft doesn't know for sure that far down the development road.

Milking the series. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood's story was full of contrivances and nonsense. Why are they staying with Ezio for another game? Just make AC3.

At first, I was disappointed that the new AC won't offer in what I was anticipating : a new character with his/own storyline and different historical period. After Brotherhood and The Da Vinci Disappearance, I always imagined Ezio retiring peacefully and working at headquarters, assigning assassination missions and training understudies. I was satisfied leaving the end of his story like that. However, I enjoyed AC II and Brotherhood's plot-line, gameplay, and graphics, so I'll keep an eye out for more details of Revelations.

I'm surprised that some of you guys aren't interested in seeing the story come to a close, and would rather just skip it, but I agree this should be Ezio's last game.

Reading up on a plot synopsis, I can see why they'd want to 'square the circle' here and have Ezio investigating Altair's homeland. Like I say, so doubt I'll be getting my preorder in, I did enjoy his two previous adventures so much after all. But I am just as eager to see the franchise move on soon too.

Another one already? I could care less about the story and I think the climbing mechanics still need a lot of work. I have yet to beat either AC2 or AC:B despite putting a reasonable amount of time in both and I'm not ready for another one. I know this is your cash cow Ubisoft but put it down for a few years and work on something new!

I'm slightly saddened to see Ezio's storyline ending. I really enjoyed his characters, the characters around him, and the environment that the story took place in. I'm stoked about more traveling around the world and whatnot!! The art direction in this series is absolutely outstanding, and I can never get enough of it.

But yeah, I'm even more excited about AC3. I really hope Desmond gets more action!!

I'm pretty excited to see what they do with the environment and architecture of Constantinople. I was just in Istanbul for a month, so seeing how they design the city in 1400 will be very cool. I have some high hopes for the complexity and detail.
