A lot of numbers were being thrown around as people, both at Sony and in the media, tried to divine the overall monetary damage the company would ultimately have to bear.

Well all postulation can end now, Sony has announced the final number at around 170 million dollars.

"Based on information currently available to Sony, our currently known costs associated with the unauthorized network access are estimated to be approximately 14 billion yen in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2012."

Of course the PSN downtime wasn't the only thing to affect Sony this quarter. As one would expect, the earthquakes and resulting Tsunami in Japan also took a heavy toll on the company.

"The impact on operating income of the Great East Japan Earthquake is estimated to be approximately 17 billion yen (£129 million) for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2011 and approximately 150 billion yen (£1.1 b) for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2012."

Even though it's quite a chunk of change, Sony is reporting that it was still profitable during this time due, most probably, to the vast array of electronic products which bear the Sony logo and have been selling better as the economy slowly improves.

Sony's been so arrogant over the years, it needs some humble pie.

Oh, woe is me, Sony is still profitable even after reporting over a three-billion dollar loss. Reminds me of the whole petrol companies lobbying for government subsidies while still boasting a massive profit.

So is that money spent addressing the intrusion, estimated sales lost from PS Store being down, or both?

That's a lot of money lost because of a few dickheads.

Sony isn't the one hurting because of this. The people who were hurt were the ones that work for developers who exclusively work on download only titles.

Sony will recover. The company is large enough and diverse enough (electronics, movies, music, etc..). The people who still say Sony deserved it and everything are kinda missing the point in my opinion. Sony did what pretty much any company would have done. Shutting it down until it was ready is the right thing to do regardless of the cost.

If you ask me, given how much people were saying the security was soft and weak it still took 5 years for anyone to break. Granted that didn't start until they pulled Linux and GeoHot broke the code but still. XBoxs have been modded since the start as have PSPs. Wiis have region breakers and mods as well. Sony never needed that since they allowed it from the start with Linux and region free games, people seem to forget that. In a way, they've been the most user friendly.
