It has been announced at an event earlier today that Monolith, developers of F.E.A.R. and Condemned, are developing a first-person shooter which takes place in the Batman universe. Entitled Gotham City: Imposters, the player takes on the sides of either Batman or The Joker impersonators in 4 vs. 4 battles using a variety of weapons and gadgets.

The gadget's themselves are beginning to sound the most interesting, and considering that Monolith is also the developer behind the No One Lives Forever series I think we can expect some fairly imaginative and light-hearted weapons to make an appearance in the title.  1Up is reporting that the gadgets themselves all have a "homebrewed" flavor and include ninja smoke bombs, gliders, grappling guns, and roller skates.

The player will also be able to customize both their look and their body type from three different archetypes, speedy, nimble, or tough which will effect the speed and constitution of the character.

A press release was issued by Warner Bros. senior VP Samantha Ryan who stated, "Gotham City Impostors blows apart expectations for superhero games with an exaggerated take on first person shooters, set in a part of the DC Universe players have never seen before...Monolith is creating a game that turns Gotham City upside down and we think fans are going to have a blast with this creative twist on multiplayer heroism and anti-heroism as they play up the classic rivalry between Batman and The Joker."

Both team deathmatch and a capture the flag variant were on display. The latter called Psych Warfare mode and entailed teammates taking batteries to a brain washing machine. Even this small detail starts to encompass the feel we can expect from this game and the inspiration that No One Lives Forever made have played in development of the new title.

This seems to be a more comedic FPS that won't take itself too seriously. Its been a while since a not so serious fps was released, or am I wrong?

I think this actually made the "what has Monolith been working on?" situation even stranger. They are a big studio who had a pretty big IP in F.E.A.R, I don't think they would give that up to work on this. My guess would be that we are also going to see this and the rumoured Inception game at E3, both being worked on by Monolith.

    Really? That sounds dreadful.

    Does it have parkour?
This was certainly a surprise though, seeing how well monolith does singleplayer games, also seeing how well they do gunplay, and how I've loved their fear series, this has me a little interested.
Still waiting for that hook though, the thing that would make this game stand out.

Hmm. Enough to somewhat peak my interest. I have to see more of this before I make a judgement on what I think.

The fact that it's being developed by the Monolith guys has me interested. I hope to see and hear more about this soon.

Seems like they are just setting it in the DC universe for brand recognition.

A lot of people having read The Dark Knight Returns apparently. Batman literally trains and commands an army of Batmans. And they use guns, even though he'd prefer they didn't.

Tho this does sound sweet I am still gutted Monolith isn't working on a new Condemned game as the first Condemned is easily one of the most underrated games of this generation.
